Ok, if your like me... you play and play and play...  mainly because it makes you happy, but you mainly play where no one other than those that live with you get to hear.

Cleaned a lot of brush off my fence between me and the neighbors today.  Made a big enough brush pile to be a true bonfire when I finally burn it.  But my neighbor came out and thanked me... and told me she had recently turned 80.

So a few hours later, and a few sessions with the chain saw...  I took a break.

I walked next door and knocked on the door.   I said since she just turned 80, and we've been neighbors for decades...  couldn't think of anything she could need or want, but that I had an idea.

Took out my violin, and got it ready.   Played Shenandoah, the Blackest Crow, When You Say Nothing at All, and Amazing Grace.   Most people would feel bad about making a senior citizen cry... but it really made her day.  Never knew the violin was her favorite instrument even after living next door to each other for many, many years.

So coming from someone who almost never plays for anyone, get out and play for at least one person you would not normally play for... you just might make their day.

That's a wonderful story, @Taper123 . That was so kind of you to do. You didn't say if your neighbor lives alone, but, if so, I'm sure that she was happy for the company, as well as the music. A double gift. Hats off to you!

valentineviolin  , her husband and I had been talking off and on over the last two days over the fence.   He was out in his workshop when I went over.  Funny thing is, when we were talking about the violin  I brought up how it was such a versatile instrument, that it could even play the band on his T-shirt today...  a 30 year old AC/DC shirt and then I played the intro to Back in Black....

Just starting my 15th month of playing a violin... Some day I might even know what I am doing, but for now it makes me happy, and as the story I told... it at least makes others happy when I share.

So go make somebody's day... and play them something.

That's great Taper123!  it is hard to play for other people, but so glad you did - sounds like you made her day!

So awesome.  Thanks for doing that.

Opportunity is often missed because it wears suspenders and looks like hard work.

I don't think anyone has mentioned busking? I busk steady, spring, summer and fall, inside the Light Rail Transit stations. For me it's a necessity, as I need the income. I also jam regularly with a few acoustic guitar players close by.

anyways...busking is a good way to get out and play.

Cool story!  Just a few weeks ago I found out that my neighbor is learning guitar.  He also just bought a mandolin!

That is awesome.  Busking is one of my goals.  I am getting closer to reaching it.  Maybe this summer/fall.

@Schaick: I believe most Cities have rules about busking, ie: Places and Permits, possibly fees. I had to get a Police check before I could get my permit. You might want to check that out.

might as well ramble on a bit more.... I have a fold out heavy cardboard 'bill board' with 14" X 10" color sketches representing the tunes I do (about 20 of them) that I drew myself, and I have them in 14" X 10" clear plastic protectors,...holes thru the top of the bill board w/ a couple of binder rings so I can flip them front to back as I play them.

each one has the Song title, year it was composed, and a color graphic.

BUT... last year I left it out over night in the rain, pretty much ruined everything, BUT my Lady Jam friend re-drew them all for me, copied most of them, but made good improvements to 3 or 4 of them. She drew a Disney type Castle for Once upon a Dream (Sleeping Beauty) and copied the God Father movie Logo exactly...the puppet strings, and she did a great job of Yesterday by McCartney, a scroll type calendar with Yesterday in Calligraphy thru the middle of the calendar.

...anyways it looks great and works great...slows people down a bit and gives them a visual along with the tunes.
