Ok it's been only 3 weeks I started learning, I've taking it pretty relax, like 2 practices of 30 min per day, no stressing myself at all, having fun. But this last week my interest has taken a new direction!
- I'm listening a lot of violin music or paying attention to the violin part even in modern music when I was not before.
- When I close my eyes in bed I see my fingers on the fingerboard trying to follow the songs I'm humming.
- Started looking seriously at dexterity exercises instead of just beginner songs.
- Been trying to find more time to practice then my daily 1 hour.
- Having lots of questions on techniques and music reading, etc.
Had your beginner experience kicked up a notch at some time also? Like when maybe your realized this probably was not just a phase or a hobby but something you seriously wanna learn?

The mere fact that you are contemplating these matters is a sign that it may be too late. I have never found reason to believe that really dedicated violin people are anywhere near rational. I think that many will outgrow this phase but others are hopeless. C'est la vie !
Yeah, my ambition is always nagging me.

Most definately. I find myself listening to violins being played in all music and thinking about how to play that piece. I haven't picked up my violin in a few weeks now but I know I will soon be back. I can't stay away from it. I also have been learning all I can about writing and reading music.

I would be interested in learning what emotional or other psycological motivation compels you, we, us; the provoked, to reach so high towards our goals that other aspects of our lives may come second.
Avarice
Power
Recognition/fame
Belonging
Esteem
Love
Force; as in a child compelled by parents to take music lessons
I suppose some of these run into each other, and there are others I havent thought of......perhaps you can shed some insight!

None of the above? I would add peace to that, when I play I just feel disconnected with the rest of the world. I'm in my little special place with my false notes and squeeks but I feel all warm inside and nothign else matter.

The desire for peace is a good one.
However, I think Id choose belonging as my motivation because I desire to learn more about, and bring myself closer to, the world of music; not the hip hop or gangster rap world, but the dignified assemblage of great contemporary musicians who with classical music bring joy and comfort to a world gone crazy.
I watched Andre Rieu on U-tube and decided to give violin a try. I dont want to be like him, but Id like to be of that world.
Of course the subway attracts my attention as well...AVARICE...too bad we dont have any of those here.

Your on the right track NV. You're a quick learner. The last few months I haven't had the time to practice much at all because I've had a lot of guitar work but I'm back at the violin and I have time now again to play for hours a day. Musical instruments are an obsession for me in general. My goal with the violin is to include it in my song writing and also play live with it.

What is life without some obsessions?
Anyone who has ever been in love has been obsessive. "Straight A" or Top Honors students are pretty much always obsessive. Any craftsman or artist whose work is admired was usually obsessive.
Alcoholics, drug addicts, gamblers, sex addicts, they are all obsessive *and* spend more time and money on their obsessions than most musicians do. LOL
So far as obsessions go, violin and music in general is probably one of the healthier ones.
I would rather reach the end of life with some good obsessions that I enjoyed and was proud of than to look back and see nothing but a tattered crazy quilt of unsuffered consequences.
So jump in, the water is fine.
