Joining an Amateur Orchestra

I've never been in an orchestra, but my girlfriend claims she played the Tenor Sax in one. She says the rush you get of being in the middle of "the music" immediately negates any nervousness you might have had going there.
I can't read music, but I understand it perfectly.
