Well, not the shortest note - because it's not a musical note, but this is the first motion that every fiddler goes through, before moving the bow enough to actually sound a pitch.

 

Here are a few short notes on open A, followed by the "shortest sound" possible.

 

I know it's a bit of a bizarre thought, but few of us stop to think about the mechanics :)
