Had our first session of this season last night and what a blast! I say OUR liberally which really means the session that caters to new players but are seasoned jammers themselves... 14 showed up..had the BEST concertina player to my left and an expert tenor banjo player to the right... a couple of flutes, a pro bozuki player took backing..had a whistle player and fiddles/mando's.
the first 3 this season will be slower but not always slow just to get some of us newer people in habit of going again...basically help us along but the intention is after that to have regular sessions starting at their normal session tempo again..
we started with kefunkten..nice and easy then sped up..not too bad and i felt like the nerves shaking off a bit. My first pick was swingin on the gate..I did alright but felt Ive done better with it. my next pick around was musical priest and someone paired silver spear with it.. musical priest became a bit of a zen moment when the session leader sped ut up..it actually became easier..i got a picture of a test pilot breaking thtough sound barrier..it was like...yeah..ive arrived ( picture turtle shouting weeee lol) anyway THEN came the HUUP..for silver spear..( which ive played and know but fell apart ..just couldnt remember anything till last round. back to reality..crashed the jet....lol..maybe next time..
ANYWAY...one of the first picks was lucy farrs which i havent heard played at any of these but was happy it was called cuz i know and like.. so we started playing and it was sounding great...kinda zoned out and then i heard the a part repeating and i felt we were on b... we sorta fell apart cause we all were like sorry i messed up.. everyone evidently felt that way or took the blame... then another round and it happened again ( im thinking..oh gawd please dont let it have been me either time..lol probably was but oh well..).. we limped through the last repeat and moved on to an Em toss the feathers for the next tune I think it was..
so QUESTION..do you remember a tune that was just one of those that busted a jam or session and wasnt because of speed or difficulty? maybe the parts sound too alike? or it doesnt have a.defining ending and just loops back on itself and one you could get lost in easy?....just to hear other funny tales and to be on the lookout.

@ABitRusty -
THIS IS THE BEST -
to hear this much excitement over
fiddling LIVE, with other musicians!
HOPE YOU KEEP HAVING THIS MUCH FUN!
But, you're scaring me... 😳 maybe I better just learn to play some chords.
I wouldn't even stand a chance at our family reunion - one of Kevin's brothers plays Blue Grass on banjo & they'd probably expect me to actually try to keep up! ... as if I'm well enough to go.
...I zone out even when A & B parts are completely different. 🙄

I was wondering... why did things fall apart if there were seasoned musicians also playing along? Was everyone zoned out?
Always thought it was pretty fabulous to listen/watch Jam Sessions & Festival videos from the Nordic Countries. I'd hear people out of time & not always playing the same notes - no one seemed to care. Always at least a few seasoned players to keep the melody shining through it all & everyone obviously had fun.
I know there's Fiddlers here that must have some great Jamming/Session stories to share with you.
Sorry... not trying to rain on your thread. (lol)

hmmm.. who knows. thats the good thing about playing with other people in person..you get the experience.
If it happens again ill suggest watching some nordic players on youtube.
you could have your family over to the house to jam maybe? sounds like something to try! it doesnt always goes smooth like on t.v. nobody post the flops...well its more common to always see the other...sometimes it just gets away from everyone whatever the reason...especially in a learning setting and not up on the stage as a performance.
maybe someone else down the road can add a story here about in person playing.

i am envious, not had a jam session for two years now because of the plague, not sure I could even play along on any instrument wit others now, sounds like you had a great time and thats what matters, nothing else;)
Sucks @stringy...sorry its still like that.. it depends on area here on whats going on.
Your banish misfortune party popped in my mind during our session! .For a minute i thought..yup i know that one from the party...but hadnt PRACTICED it so quickly just put fiddle back down and listened.
Hope things progress there and your back playing soon..Any war stories from that past like what we had happen?
