Hi Everyone, I am a newbie here.
I am learning vibrato through Fiddlerman Youtube channel and I found out that there are 3 types of Vibrato ( Wrist Arm and Finger ). I am picking up Wrist Vibrato. However, I found it really difficult to learn it myself and I am unable to have a violin teacher or go to instrumental school. So, I am here with a hope to ask everyone a favour that can you pls check my vibrato through the video? I know if I keep practising on a wrong vibrato, It will badly affect a lot on long-term violin learning
I much appreciate. Thank you

I'm a relative newbie myself, but I will throw out some suggestions from my teacher that I think would help you.
Don't be in a hurry to get your vibrato fast. Take it slow. Start with two slow vibrato motions per bow stroke, that annoying "waaaa-waaaa" sound to it. Use a metronome to keep your bow strokes the same, so force your vibrato to be even. Slowly add more speed, 4 vibrato motions per bow stroke, then 6, then 8, on and on.
Doing it slow and working your way up helps you control it, for when you need a sappy slower vibrato working into a dramatic faster one, etc.
Keep up the good work, and welcome to the forum!

Nathan Cole has a good video on vibrato on artistsworks. Most videos are only available through a membership, but this one in particular is public. One of the thing he comments to a video sent to him, is that there is no need to practice fourth finger vibrato using the fourth finger alone, instead keep another finger down while you do vibrato with your fourth finger,

Hi, thank for your reply to my video. I found it hard to put other fingers down when using the fourth finger vibrato. Do you have any tips for this problem?
Thank you

Good start! It takes time to develop vibrato. As for myself, I tend to hold my breath while playing a intense vibrato.
What do your teachers advise on breathing? Inhale or exhale before vibrato?
Hi, I picked up violin from some violinist on youtube such as Fidderman , Eddy Chen,.. and as I notice none of them mention we should inhale of exhale before vibrato. However, I guess and I usually keep steady breathing when vibrato.

Yes... I agree...breath. Not that I can do much vibrating. I am interested in hearing that your other finger can also be down when you are vibrating with pinky. Interesting I wouldn't have thought of that.
Those that vibrate, have you tried this and if so what do you think?

@coolpinkone My teacher does that, keeps her third finger down to vibrate with her fourth, and that's what she has me do. It does help with that weak little finger to give it a buddy. Trying without strains my fourth finger too much.

@damfino thank you.
Good to know. I hope that this coming year finds me having lessons again. I miss having a teacher. I only ever had one for that first year and I had so much going on in my life, I had not committed to it all as I did in the subsequent years.
My first year of violin was fun...and I was loving it.... the second year I also loved it, and got more serious, but I think I was on the chat on FM more than I practiced.
The 3rd year I ended up getting a cello and guitar and kind of diluting my playing time. And then I got more serious.
The fourth year...well it has been only about the violin. (And well a few cigar box guitars and trying to learn how to play them)...but now I play violin everyday. Perhaps there is one day a week that time and energy escapes me playing.... anyway... sorry... off topic...
But I am finally working on a bit of vibrato...and also my attempts to using shifting in FM's swan lake arrangement.

@coolpinkone That's great, I hope you start lessons again I had only intended to take lessons for a few months, and now I think I'd feel lost without my weekly lesson, lol.
If you catch me on StreetJelly, feel free to ask me to show you the slow vibrato practice. I'm probably not much of a teacher, but I could show you some boring "waaa-waaa" vibrato practice
