You WOULD be perceived as a "better" violinist IF you announced the Strad BEFORE you played.  No one in the audience would want to admit that they could not recognize a superior instrument (regardless of your playing).  

I've heard two live Strads in concert and everyone raved about the sound which to me was not totally better than other pro violins I had heard.

There's an old joke about this guy who lucked out at an auction and brought home a Rembrandt and a Stradivarius.. Only to find out that Rembrandt made rather poor fiddles and Stradivarius couldn't paint worth a darn.
