I always tell people that I can "play" anything, but they might not like what they hear! roflol

I actually had this conversation not to long ago with a friend about this!  Violinist vs. Student.  When do we become violinists, not just students.  (of course, we're always students!)  We couldn't agree on the point and the discussion ended when I stated that I'll just stick with the "Fiddler" title! LOL  My friend had no response to that because she couldn't define what a fiddler was!  dancing

I may be a bit bolder, but immediately after I was able to play a single song (Amazing Grace) and it actually sounded decent, I began to state that I was a violinist, albeit a beginner violinist.

Here's how I look at it; there are a ton of crappy drivers on the roads yet they all call themselves drivers, there are tons of people who call themselves fishermen yet may never catch a fish, they just love the activity of fishing; I am "violining" hence I am a violinist!

I can easily say that I play the violin as long as I'm careful not to tell anyone.

As usual Oliver, very witty answer. 🙂

I like the way you think, Fred. Not that I'm trying to push it. Just the opposite. I don't want to tell people I'm something that I'm not. But, now that you mention it, I use your logic when it comes to golf. I say that I'm a golfer, though I'm not very good at it. I do try to learn new things in order to get better, however.

And, I guess it makes sense that if you can play songs on a violin, then you play the violin. It's just a matter of how well you play.

Thanks for all the responses and opinions everyone! I guess that I can say that I'm a violinist, but I will continue to qualify that with "beginner" or "student" for a long time to come.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.
