I always tell people that I can "play" anything, but they might not like what they hear!
I actually had this conversation not to long ago with a friend about this! Violinist vs. Student. When do we become violinists, not just students. (of course, we're always students!) We couldn't agree on the point and the discussion ended when I stated that I'll just stick with the "Fiddler" title! LOL My friend had no response to that because she couldn't define what a fiddler was!

I may be a bit bolder, but immediately after I was able to play a single song (Amazing Grace) and it actually sounded decent, I began to state that I was a violinist, albeit a beginner violinist.
Here's how I look at it; there are a ton of crappy drivers on the roads yet they all call themselves drivers, there are tons of people who call themselves fishermen yet may never catch a fish, they just love the activity of fishing; I am "violining" hence I am a violinist!
