Ok, these reviews just make me want to buy another violin.  For some reason mine doesn't sound that nice.   Hmmmmm, might be the the musician..  Naaa, it has to be the violin.  That's what i'm telling my wife.

I'm sure we could get FM to write you a note for your wife. LOL

I'll even write you a note too. Everyone should have more than one violin. What would you practice on if something happened to thee primary instrument? What if you broke a string? Good to have a back up violin!

Where should we send that note?coffee1

Looks great and sounds good, and I am sure it will only improve as you work on it, cdennyb.  Love the look of those boxwood fittings as well!

Wow.. Denny... it is wonderful. How beautiful. Thanks for the close up shots. You must be so thrilled. How thrilling that you can make the instrument play the way that you like. Something tells me this instrument will be near and dear to you for a long long time. Enjoy! Your playing is lovely. Just lovely, great bow strokes. I like the way you play. It is unique to you. Beautiful job. Great Review. Great Post.

Here is a vid of the actual music.  It is called Sad Romance, but youtube has a lot of "Sad Violin" lables.  Either way, enjoy:

Trying hard to figure out on whom to blame my Kohr 500 obsession!!! Denny... Fiddlerman...or am I just a greedy person? .... maybe I can blame this group of members (aka enablers)... ha ha ha I certainly can't blame it on the fact that I have "outgrown" my violin...right? ha ha... just at work...facing a manic Monday with my head in the clouds for another violin.... ha ha...

OK, finally the cat is out of the bag.

Great job Dennis,

Loved the clear, sharp pictures and your demo. Your wife is really going to freak out when she finds out that you can play :-)
You've come a long way.

Just want to clarify one detail for everyone. Dennis first ordered a CVN-500 that I tested for him. One week for the instrument to get to me and I tested it same day, then I shipped it back to Cecilio because we were not satisfied with the sound. I then suggested we try the K500 which usually takes 1 week to set up but took a little over 2, (possibly because I didn't tell them that it was a priority, LOL). The Kohr instruments only get set up after they are ordered which is better in a way because they don't sit in boxes with strings getting old and so forth. The K500 was shipped to me which takes about a week, and I didn't review it until almost a week had gone by because I was busy :-(
I then shipped the violin to Dennis, economy and that cost him a week as well.
Most instuments are shipped the same day or day after and received on an average of one week after ordering depending on where you live. The Kohr instruments take a maximum of 3 weeks if HC is busy and needs 2 weeks to set up. Sometimes I can push them to do it right away and have it shipped within a week :-)

Sounds great Dennis. She's a beauty of a violin. For sure It's about time I better start posting videos again too as it's been way too long but I'm practicing!

bunny_pole_dancerHi Denny... a question. When you say you made a new bridge.  Does that mean you actually carve a new one from scratch or you have bridges that you buy and you modify them.

I think my bridge on my hoffman has my strings too close together. Now my teacher has inspected and not mentioned this...but I just get the feeling that they are..... Is there a measurement for the distance between strings on the bridge...a guide so to speak.

And forgive me if you have all covered this already.

Thanksbunny_pole_dancer

To answer your Q there CPO, the outside dimension on the strings, (E to G) is 34.5mm and the spacing between them is about 11.8mm (This is for a 4/4 violin size)

Yes, I started from a blank bridge, way oversize in height and thickness. I get them from the shop I work at P.T. I have to sand, file, and cut (with a razor sharp knife) them using trial and error to get the final result just perfect. Sometime it happens in a few tries sometimes it takes days of work to get there.

OK, I've done my last bridge for the K500. I kept the original, put it in a bag in case I screwed up royally and had to go back to square one. I made a new one yesterday, carved and sanded and filed on it using every ounce of my past experience in making a bridge and got it 'close' to what I wanted. It wasn't quite good enough (according to the sound analysis traces) so today I had a couple of hours to myself so I said what the hey... I'll work on it some more... I did and no matter what I did the results just kept going downhill and backwards. It went from ok, to bad, then to worse. so I did what any self respecting craftsman would do, I took it off, snapped it in half and threw it in the trash can!

I started all over from scratch, again and after only 6 adjustments to it, I have achieved luthier nirvana... I made the trace on my new K500 as close to that of my 90 yr old German violin as physically possible (considering the age of this K500).

Here's the trace analysis jpg for you especially Daniel... check this out!
