Just a reference to my current project, which is now underway.

12 voices I think now.  I may be dropping the Tubular Bells (which only come in much later- and just an occasional "highlight"), but, well, I'll see... Here's the intro....   There's no fiddle yet... it will become the lead melody instrument, but there's a way to go before that happens.

I'm putting it together in MuseScore, and once I'm happy with the general arrangement, I'll export it to the REAPER DAW I'm currently using and remap the voices to better sounding VST instruments.

Anyone got a good sampled bagpipe sound-font somewhere ?

**FINALLY** the melody lead line will be replaced by a variety of fiddle takes, recorded to REAPER, some takes with effects in places (normal, chorused, ethereal, overdriven (the intent on that is to have it sound not unlike a distortion/overdriven guitar) and so on)  ....   go figure!   The entire piece should run to about 5 minutes, with lots of variation to avoid it sounding repetitive ...

Anyway, that's the plan...

Oh well, keeps me happy.... LOL

Come back in 6 months, it may be complete by then....

Oh, if you do listen to this, play through something with a good bass response... (and as loud as you like!)

This reminds me strongly of the version Runrig used to do.

:) That's it precisely.... hoping to do something in the "style of" / "inspired by" their take..

I tried to get close to the chord intro sequence... after that, well, it's all up for grabs !

YOU are an inspiration BillyG!

Can't wait to hear when you're finished!

I'm sad I haven't even plugged my fiddle in, yet - knew I'd go crazy off on some tangents, never to return to attempting good basic intonation.

So, I'm forcing myself to hold back on everything my brain says is creative... well except...(lol) you help keep my wheels turnin'!

Don't I remember an older, (pretty famous) Rock Group play Loch Lomond a few years back?

:) @ELCBK - been called many things in my time, "inspiration" is one of the nicer, and indeed, repeatable ones !

Don't I remember an older, (pretty famous) Rock Group play Loch Lomond a few years back?

Yes, you're probably recalling Runrig ( and I gave accreditation to them in the comments which you'll see if you select to view my post in YouTube).  And a couple of posts above, Peter gives a link to a their 1991 live concert....  Runrig are (well, "were" - now disbanded) a local group to me - founder members from the Isle of Skye, just across the water from where I lived for a while.  Always like how they retained a "Scottish feel" while successfully bringing a lot of well know (within Scotland) traditional tunes and songs into a new age...

I'll update my progress on this project here, from time to time.  Part of my reason for doing this is actually not so much to play a rock version of Loch Lomond (it's an easy tune to play), but more to investigate the use of a DAW and spend time investigating, in detail, its capabilities, the VST instrumentation available, and the various (many, many!) FX plug-ins....

Huh, as if I didn't have other things to do....

  Oh well !!!!

Almost a month on....   not a lot has happened - other things took over ( as they do )

But I'm about ready to work on the first section.  I've re-scored the melody line slightly (it is much simpler now, very basic, but it sits better with the accompaniment which has its own richness and sub-rhythms, and gives good scope for a "rock-style" (sort-of) take on one of the lead-melody-line play-throughs).

This will be a "phased" project - I want to replace the synth voices (and there are - what - 13 or so of them) by fiddle parts - but with the parts audio post-processed with various effects.  Yup - it's not an overnight job.  LOL...

So, this is just an update - nothing to share - but the project is still alive, hopefully I'll get the intro plus first 30 bars (using an e-fiddle + FX as one of the voices) demoed in a few days...
