In my blog, I've mentioned more than a few times that I enjoy doing improvisation with this and here is an example (though not my finest attempt). Don't watch unless you have a high pain threshold! lol

Excellent stuff John, I think your progress is amazing, especially in such a short space of time.

I think you gave the tune a real blue grass feel, and really started to loosen up as the music went on, which for me is the hardest thingΒ  to do, keep it up great work, the practice is really paying off.

@stringy - Thanks, I like the improv so I can concentrate on tone and technique, but more importantly for the freedom it gives me. I think part of my problem is that I hear and feel the mistakes too much to really enjoy my overall playing and feel like I'm not progressing as much as I desire.

Everyone hears and feels the mistakes and everyone also feels they are not progressing as fast as you think you should, you have to remember that violin is arguably, along with viola, the hardest instruments in the world to learn. As well as hearing the notes, along with bowing and all the other things its beyond difficult, this is the challenge and why I tried to learn, there really is no other way except constant practice, no short cuts, if you can hear mistakes you can fix them.

Playing fretted instruments is like painting by numbers compared to this instrument, dont get me wrong all instruments require dedication, but to me at least oher ones are like childs toys compared to fiddle.

@Mark - Thank you, it's improv that helps keep my interest, and I think it is helping my overall playing.

If I had a penny for every time I said that to myself in the first few years of playing . . . well, unfortunately, as adult learners, we know how to criticize ourselves really well.Β

If you watch a little kid learning the violin, they just saw away violin-studentΒ  They don't give a hoot about what they sound like--they're just doing what the teacher told them to do.Β  And enjoying it.

There are times to practice (pull everything apart & analyze, etc.,), and then there are times to just play--and when you play, you accept where you are on your learning journey & enjoy it.Β  Making time for both is important smile

@SharonC - Thanks means a lot to hear that from you and other talented folks! And I gotta say, I'm fairly happy with where I am now and what I see ahead.
