I’ve talked about the Bach in the Subways annual event before – info/history is here:
This year, I performed movement 2 of the Bach Double (Concerto in Dm for two violins) with my teacher & her husband – a more substantial piece than stuff I’ve been performing.
I had some shaky bow going on—felt myself just trying to get to the end 😬
I did ok (not great), but experience is the best teacher, right? So, I've got a clip of it is here:

Our group played a bunch of other smaller things; I’ve got a 3-minute highlight video here:

@Mouse @ABitRusty @ELCBKK Thank you!

@SharonC -. . . did I see a vielle played in there?
Who was your audience for this performance?
@ELCBKK
I think it's a custom 5-string octave viola – he likes to use it instead of lugging a cello around.
Audience was just folks in local community to where this church is (I live in a nearby town). The community is well aware of us—teacher is well known, and when we group practice there, it’s open for folks to come in and listen.

@SharonC -
Thanks for the info!
Now I'm really curious what strings he is using, if truly an Octave VIOLA - since no one makes strings for one anymore (that I can find, anyway - only Octave Violin strings). Don't go out of your way, but if you happen to think of asking when you all get together again, I'd appreciate it. 😊
The website is interesting, you don't need an Octave Fiddle to play fiddle tunes down an octave, just a Viola - but it would be easier to play tunes down with normal fingerings, so I get it.

Congrats @SharonC ! playing in front of people + in a small group where you're basically on your own... that's not easy. So you did great, some shaky bow sounds just normal ;--)
I was taken by surprise by the 'viola' ! (I must say I prefer the normal viola pitch, or a cello, but I understand the practical aspect)
I'm fooling around with the Bach double these days (at small speed !), I like that piece. Even if it means being unfaithful to my viola. Can't find a sheet music that looks fine though. I've printed one that wants me to shift much more than looks necessary.
... now wondering how it would sound on a viola, a 5th down.
@stringy @wtw Thank you!
@wtw
There’s a copy of the Double for violas transposed down a 5th (Gm) at this site. It’s not free, but it looks like a large visual & audio sample is listed there, if you want to take a look at it.

@stringy The project was first started in 2010 by a cellist in a NYC subway. Most folks are not performing in subways--the idea is that it is free & open to the public

Sharon I was in London the other day to watch a few shows, there was a violinist in one of the subways tunnels connecting the tube lines, he was absolutely brilliant, one of the Best violinists I have ever heard, I now wonder if he was part of the project. He was actually better than the show I was going to se that evening, which was 2 and a half hours long, he was still playing extremely difficult classical pieces when I came out after it ended.
Cant beat a sunny day
