I feel like such a dumbass posting this clip, but it's the first time I've recorded myself playing so I thought I'd finally share something!  I've been learning now for almost 6 mo.s and here's what I got, lol.  This is just a simple song I've been learning recently.

I'd love candid feedback!  The things I noticed, that are glaring, are that my left thumb is up waaaay too high; my bow position is jacked, I'm playing way too high on the bow and I started out too high; there are a couple of other things but these are the two biggest problems I see; you may have other advice,,,, please!

I think you did quite well, actually.  You already know about the thumb and etc.  But intonation and phrasing sounded good, and you caught the feel of the song.

Thanks Daniel.

Ken, thank you so much for believing in me roflol

I can't imagine why it doesn't open; it opens for me, and apparently for Daniel.  Let me try it another way.  I really didn't want to ever put myself on YouTube, but this may be the only way to view all of my hard work, lmao

It didn't start right away, So I let it keep going until the slider said it was done and replayed it.  Ran fine after that.

I use Ubuntu, though, rather than Windows or Mac, so video often runs kinda oddly for me on forums and etc.dunno

i right clicked and let it play in windows media player.

Fred, try moving your left elbow more toward your centerline of your body. That should help with the thumb placement and the bent wrist. It may even help with making it more comfortable to use the lower part of your bow.

Thanks D, I'll look at that.

Thank you Toni, I think before I post another clip, I'll work on the song a few minutes to get warmed up before I record it, lol, because the bowing problems I would recognize pretty quickly if I had just played it a few minutes before.  The high thumb is just a bad habit I'm trying to break (apparently not trying HARD ENOUGH, haaaaa)

Now I can see it :D that was great! Thanks for sharing. Thumb too high but the rest seems fine from this angle!

Thanks NV - you did such a great job on all of your vids, I never realized what a strange experience it really is.  You get to see and hear EVERYTHING, good and bad.  As I said earlier, I'm going to try to record more of my play because it's a great feedback tool.

The other thing I realized is how difficult it is to smile while playing (for me) because I'm so focused on what I'm doing while I'm playing,,,, no room in my head yet for the performance!

Great job, Fred! Thanks for sharing the video. Not that I'm in any position to critique, but my only observation would be what my teacher tells me...to lengthen the bow stroke. Intonation sounded very good. Love the back drop, BTW.

thumbs-up

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

Thank you Diane; btw, I think everyone who is focused on a specific skill/technique has a valid opinion/observation.  You are absolutely right about the bowing.  If I had warmed up before actually recording, I would have re-focused on lengthening my stroke and using the entire bow instead of just the tip (you can actually see at one point that I freakin just ran outta bow, and had to decide quickly to start another direction or just squeek that last note in on that stroke, I played it how it was written, just ran out of land, lmao).

I'm going to work on something again, and try recording it; I like the process.

roflol That was not nice. Funny but not nice. Poor Fred.

Anyway, great job and thanks for posting it.

Fred - Here is an opportunity for you to advertise your shoulder-rest. Under the information part of this video you can post both information and a link to your online store for the rest. If nothing else, google sees that you have valid inbound links from a good source.

Keep on posting your progress, you will learn a lot just from doing that.

Great job Fred. Glad to see you on the screen (small screen). The one thing that I did notice was how low you keep your fingers, great job.bananabananabananagold_stardancingdancingdancing
