I recently reached 4 years () since I got my first fiddle (my Fiddlerman Concert violin) and have been working on this tune. It's still a work in progress, but here's my practice from last night:

Thank you @Mouse @Fiddlerman @HP and @ABitRusty
Stepping away from sheet music and only learning by ear the past few months seems to have given me the kick in the butt my playing needed at this point in time (plus my nerve issue settling down more often, letting me play longer). I can focus more on my actual playing rather than trying to figure out how to play off the sheet music.

I wish I could learn from sheet as fast as I do by ear. I can sit down and learn a tune in a few minutes by ear, and then spend the rest of the time actually learning how to play it to the best of my abilities, instead of spending all my time trying to figure out how to read the rhythm, lol.

I've always thought of it as a bad family habit, lol, that's why I wanted to try learning sheet music. Anyone who plays instruments in my family can't read sheet music, and can only learn by ear. My aunt's violin teacher in high school begged her to learn her notes and to stop learning by ear, lol. But now I decided to just embrace it and do what works.

Great playing! Sounds really good. I think when it comes to fiddling, playing by ear can be a huge asset. While with classical I think the reading part is more important. Just my thinking, I could be wrong.
It's easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself. Johann S.Bach

Thanks, everyone I really did have fun learning this tune
@AnnyJ I think being able to learn by ear is a big help with fiddling, since for so much of it, sheet music is just a suggestion, you learn the basic tune and then do what you want with it. I still wish I was better at reading sheet music, though, haha.

The ornaments were really nice on this one. I think you have that one down. Thanks for sharing!
I go back and forth on notes/notation and playing by rote. I mostly play these kinds of tunes using the notation as my beginning guide and then wean myself off of it...or try to. I have a vid I didn't post here but it was me playing a bunch of memorized stuff.
In orchestra I think reading the notes is an expectation. I'm not presently in an orchestra and play more with old timers who know tunes by memory. The danger there is sometimes they take their "interpretations" to the extreme, so much so that I hardly recognize the original tune. I think it's ok to add some personal things to a tune so long as I can recognize it enough to play it lol. Adding "swing" is common and I can usually deal with that. Ornaments don't hurt ever....but some of these man...you wouldn't recognize it comparing notation.
I'm working on another tune I hope to post soon. I'm slowly playing more of it by memory.
