John

This is a GREAT video. I enjoyed the music very much. Could you explain it a bit for me? What kind of music is it? What is the instrument that resembles a zither? Who are the musicians. I'd like to hear more of this.

@johnny

That's great stuff John.

While watching it I had a thought (yes, it dose happen occasionally  wink)

What are the chances of you posting a 'short' and 'very simple' piece of sheet music for this type of music.

And if you 'can' do that, could you also post a video so that we can hear how it should sound.

Maybe some of our more advanced players would like to take a shot at it. hats_off

Seen it all. Done it all. Can't remember most of dunno ..... What was I saying???? facepalm

@uncledave That is Oriental music.the instrument is Qanun which is an ancient pharaonic instrument you can know about it more from Google, the musicians are just old masters enjoying their time by playing advanced pieces lol

Thanks John. I have some questions:

1) How is the violin tuned?

2) Are there more than the 12 half steps of Western music in Oriental music? I thought I was hearing notes that were about a quarter step apart but I'm not sure as this is completely new to me.

3) I'd love to see how this music is written.

Thanks again,

Dave

@uncledave looks like you made your own Googling :D
1-the violin is tuned G-D-G-D to make it easier to play quarter tones

2-the Arabic scale or maqam is divided into 24 equal semitone to be where a quarter tone equals half of semitone to be simple as possible that means in some maqam or mode like "Rast" there is a quarter tone which is lowered from the natural note by a quarter tone example lets take the B and Bb let say the interval between the Bb and the B natural is 50 cent the Bb on 50 and The B natural on 100 cent as example the B quarter or oriental wil be at 75 cent (lowered by the half of the semitone you can say lowered by a quarter step instead of half step.

Quarter tones can be notated using the half-flat sign Arabic music notation half flat.svg or the half-sharp sign Arabic music notation half sharp.svg
not all the arabic or oriental maqams or scales have quarter tones

3- here is a sheet music to the song above the one in the reply which have quarter notes which have half-flat sign Arabic music notation half flat.svg  in page 3

Thanks John!

I have respect for any musician who can master a 24 tone scale!

I noticed in the printed music that there is a section where there are no bars. It looks like one LONG LONG measure. How is this played? Ad lib?

@uncledave the one on page 9 line 6 that part is in the song itself which was by umm kalthoum the singer herself the video i shared before is a musical video of the whole song not only for the music section .Anyway that part you can time it as you like, like a solo part for example but for the singer.
in page 13 that is also a solo part but in the music section the open measure means that you can time it as you like ..
