I'm clear on what the other badges are for, but what are the "Author", "Composer" and "DIY" badges for ?

Author is writing an article for the website, composer is composing a piece of music, and diy is a substantial piece of mending violins (not changing strings, or something...)

LOL Ken - my best description ( as I recall ) would be -

Author - someone who has posted a blog entry related to music or violin workmanship (actual build - like DIY - or playing technique etc)

Composer- someone who has not just "put a new tune together" - many of us do that - but scored it up for others to share (and hopefully played it on violin, or at least given us an idea of how it should sound on that instrument using some synth / clever app / etc - like the many pieces @iBud has so kindly given us)

DIY - close to "luthier-ship" - we're not talking the simple changing of strings or just moving the soundpost - "something more than that" I guess - like taking bits of the fiddle apart and "re-working" them ( like even popping out the nut and re-forming the bridge shape/height etc to lower the action etc, etc might qualify - someone who demonstrates an understanding of the physical mechanics that make the violin what it is)

That's my current take on it....   I think Diane or Pierre has the full answer ( I think.... LOL )

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG

Please make your own, different mistakes, and help us all learn :-)

Ok, here's todays video, Ode to Joy. Still some mistakes in there, but getting better. Still not totally comfortable with my fourth finger, but working on it. Have 3 songs to work on for homework this week.

Oh, and pssst, do I get a Critique badge for posting my video over there over the weekend?

Oh Ya,

I missed that. Because we don't want to hurt peoples feeling plus we want everyone to be able to share their performance without risking being torn apart, we created the critique corner.

The idea is that you don't give constructive criticism unless it's asked for. You more than deserve that badge but Ken is right. :)

I realize that you have been posting your videos for help, improvement and as a learning process which entitles you to the badge. Asking for critique is good enough for me. :)

No problem, I wasn't sure what had to be posted in that forum to get the badge, lol. If my 4th finger video doesn't count, I'm sure I could come up with something else so that my badge is legit, lol. :) I'm learning, I need people to critique me ;)

I wasn't sure where this thread would belong exactly, if that's what Ken means? I want critique, of course, but also don't want to feel like I'm monopolizing that forum for people who are looking for specific advice. :)

Of course your 4th finger video counts. Perfect!!!!

Also, your videos are pretty much what this forum is all about. :)
This is how you progress. It's also great for others who don't dare post videos of themselves to learn from the advice given to you and others who do.
Also, you will be able to look back at these videos and see how much you really did improve.

Good going! Keep it up smile You seem pretty much at ease in front of the camera.

@AnnyJ Thanks :) I am anything but comfortable in front of the camera. I get nervous and it makes my bowing get an annoying bounce to it, lol. I hate being in front of the camera, lol.

@fiddlestix Thanks :)

Not being comfortable in front of the camera and still doing it will help you strengthen your nerves. Will make it easier to perform in front of others. :)

I hope so, I tend to get nervous and mess up when I have to play for my teacher, so it would be nice if I someday stop doing that, lol.

It's a slow process but it happens. Practice helps

I used to get nervous playing in front of people as a youngster.
Then in front of my teacher.
Then I progressed to getting nervous at competitions.
Then auditions.
As an adult, when I became a concert master and section leader I was nervous when I had orchestra solos. First at the rehearsals but then for the concerts.

It's all gone now. Now, the first one, getting nervous playing in front of people seems like a walk in a park comparatively.

Only in the past couple days I got brave enough to practice with the windows open, lol. For some reason playing in the shop where my lessons are doesn't bother me. the room is in the basement, but my teacher leaves the door open, and I know the sound carries into the store, but I can ignore that, I guess since I don't see the people, lol.

I'm working on 3 songs as homework for this week, my poor neighbors. Bile Em Cabbage Down, Can-Can, and Lightly Row. I'm enjoying the string crossing in Can Can.. if I could only get it up to speed, lol.

Ok, now a violin question for you. As bonus season is approaching at work, and I have been saving my tax return for something special, I decided that something special will be my "final" violin. I know I'm not good enough to be beyond my Concert violin, and won't be for quite a while, but while I'm able I want to get it, and then be done with my violin purchases. The new violin can be all snooty and taunt me, lol.

So, as an absolute final violin, would you recommend the Soloist, GCV Kreisler, or the Ming 905 (I can't justify going beyond the price of the 905 ever, no matter how much I covet the 909, lol).

I dog sit away from home once a month, so no matter what the Concert violin will always be handy for traveling with me.

I have a "Concert" violin  - similar to the FM Concert.

I have the Soloist and I have the 905.

I can't wait to see what you choose ... The Kreisler is one I would like have had in my collection... (violin greed is a terrrible thing).facepalm

You are working hard and making great progress, I am sure you will do any violin justice soon..

Congrats and do certainly keep us posted.
