I played at a nursing home this past Friday with my teacher & some others. Someone came up and recorded us (the 2nd half of Ashokan Farewell) on her phone while standing beside me; I’ve posted a link to the video below (I copied it from the nursing home’s Facebook page where they posted it).
I thought I’d share this, particularly for anyone who plans on performing (in a small venue like this, nursing home, public area, etc.,.) and hasn’t done it yet.
People are curious. Sometimes they come up to you while you’re playing, looking over your shoulder, looking at the music, etc., You get used to it. If you’re new to it, though, I would recommend not standing on the edge of your group, because a lot of things can go on there while you’re playing that you might find distracting

Great playing Sharon and one of my favorite songs too! Well done.
A year ago, I went to a local nursing facility that deals with end of life patients and asked if I could play Christmas music room to room for those who were bedridden and alone on Christmas eve. They said only if I took a three hour volunteer training program, had two negative tuberculosis tests and had the approval of their human resources department. Sad. All I wanted to do was give a little cheer on Christmas. Oh well......
Anyway, loved your music. Hope you continue entertaining the residents. I'm sure they loved it!

@stringy @ABitRusty @ELCBK @Katie L @Grandpafiddle - Thanks!
This was the first time we played at this particular facility, but my teacher & I have played a lot of duets at some others (we played one duet together this time). This was the 2nd time other people came and play, too. Good times
@Grandpafiddle -- That’s too bad about them not letting you play Christmas tunes--things shouldn't be that way. I wouldn’t be too hard on them, though. I’m sure their lawyers lecture them about liability, and scare them out of doing things.

Another trip to a nursing home. My teacher gave the audience a couple of bodhráns so they could play along

Love it Sharon, I admire the very god work you are doing with these nursing home visits as well. I had to look after someone with dementia for 12 years, and eventually in a care home, the residents took real childlike pleasure in listening, breaks my heart, thanks for doing this.

@ABitRusty @stringy @ELCBKK @Mark Thanks!
@stringy I’m just going and playing a few tunes—you cared for someone over a long period of time, so thank you
@ELCBKK Another tune from that Basic Fiddlers Celtic Book. Says that this tune, Breakdown Hornpipe has Scottish roots (but lists it as an “Irish Hornpipe”), originating as early as the 16th century.
