re doing old vids
Going over all my old stuff and trying to do them properly, cant do this one much better except if I play it with double stops so its about where I am now, dont know how much better or worse I should be after 3 years.

Exercise in bowing, bow speed pressure vibrato bow control and sound, this one has it all for me, I do need new strings on though, bear with me and aorry to bore you all.

Vibrato needs a lot of widening, have to practice that.

This is neat and pleasant to listen to @stringy. Your work on it pays off, dynamics and vibrato and overall musicality is there.

Don't ask yourself "where you should be after x years", there's no answer to that (and it only gets more depressing as the years pass, anyway).

Wow, @stringy You have a lot of dynamics and nice smooth bowing. I love your vibrato. That was lovely, and like WTW said, so pleasant to listen to. I have listened a couple times already and I keep finding more detail than I did not notice before. This is really good. 👏👏👏

I really liked it as well .. I actually think, in my opinion that’s the best video you have done, I like how it was slower as well as the vibrato and I like the dynamics. I think it had expression and i’m at rubbish at being able to hear that kind of thing. Well done and hope you post more !

Thanks wtw for having a watch and for the exceptionally kind comments not just from you but Mouse and Katie as well.

I am trying to get a bit more serious with it, at first I couldnt relax at all  my neck would hurt, my back would hurt, I changed shoulder rest 5 times, and when it came to recording a vid, red button syndrome, but I think I am finally getting past that now. I am practicing a new jig at the moment and playing it in a very Irish style, I am dropping the classical for now, its been detrimental to learning, thanks all again for having a listen, and for the encouragement as well most appreciated.;)

@stringy Bravo! Nicely played!  I think your hard work is paying off.  Your bowing is well balanced and smooth.  And you’ve got a nice, steady tempo on this, it never feels rushed.

I think something can be said about living with a piece for a while—not necessarily playing it all the time, but just having practiced it for a while, putting it aside, & picking it back up again.  Maybe like fine wine—needs to age for a while. smile

Characterize people by their actions and you will never be fooled by their words.

I like it, your sounding good, from bowing to vibrato to dynamic 's to intonation.

Well played.

@stringy -

Overall, I think you can tell you've improved quite a lot - so CELEBRATE!

Thank you for sharing this!

There's talk of the interesting story behind this slow air at The Session - Slán Le Maigh.

I have an awfully broad scope of what 3 years of playing is - there are quite a few members here on the forum playing approximately 3-4 years, but we ALL have different experiences!  The extremes range from people with very busy lives that fit in as much time as possible, learning on their own every week - to others who dedicate hours of practice every day and also follow through with individual & group teacher help/instruction (live) each week.

Here's an article that might boost your morale - take a look at year 3 & 4:
