Thank you for sharing Ronald's playing!
I LOVE he has this memorized! 🤗
What did Ronald say after seeing himself playing in this recording?
Does he have some other music to play that might excite him more? Ronald just seems a little bored, but he is SO CUTE about it! Maybe, after playing something else, he won't mind coming back to this piece and working on it more.

He is always "bored" on anything other than playing games :).
He was not required to memorize it. But he did by himeself (he read a note wrong though).
I agree he is still playing "technical" :). His teacher is trying to get him into "color" etc. now.
He is now motivated to practice more since he figures out that he is not the best player in his middle school orchestra (which he expected himself to be).
That's interesting improvement.

I think he sounds good, I think he has real talent, no doubt about that, would be a shame for it to go to waste, I also think he is being held back by a violin which is obviously too big for him, dont know what his teacher thinks about that, but his arm is at nearly full stretch at times. Before anyone says about it has been measured and all that kind of thing, you can see just looking at it, its too big. He should be playing a seven eigth if even that big, maybe a 3 quarter, what size is that, its hard to tell, if its a 3/4 he should be playing less than that., no idea what anyone else on here thinks, but for me he is being held back.
This is no critique but I genuinely feel he is being held back, by the sze of that fiddle, would love to hear what fiddlerman thinks, he is an expert.
Cant beat a sunny day

A little competition at school can be great motivation to clean up playing!
Once Ronald finds some feeling in his phrasing... the sky's the limit! 🤗
His violin does look a little big. Do any kids (that Ronald knows) play a smaller violin size? I know you just 'rescued' another violin, but even though Ronald is probably growing quickly at his age - a slightly smaller violin size might make a huge difference in comfort for him.

Andy. boy oh boy, has my son(13 years old)been there and continues to be there.....bored acting and playing without much ...well, color is the best way to describe it. He is finally coming out of it now though so I really do think age has so much to do with it. With my son, once he has the confidence that he can play good, he can react and play with color a little more each time. They are so focused on their notes, holding violin up, bow hold, dynamics...the list goes on and on, that they forget about a few things, including being more animated. You have to agree that kids have a lot to memorize other than simply reading music and playing it. So I gave my son a lot of room and time and let him come out all by himself. Of course I always reminded him of everything each time he plays and practices. Being there during each and every practice makes a HUGE difference..I mean HUGE. It is obvious this young man is very good at playing. SOme kids are thinking about how to get that special award in a ps5 game at the same time they are playing, hahahaha. Honestly the truth. Hang in there and everything will soon come together. Here is a link to my sons first time truly expressing himself while playing and he was also in a good mood this day as well, which makes a big difference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?.....&t=7s

Thanks Stringy and ELCBK. Yes. I guess he has not grown enough to fully fit 4/4. I'm not sure :). He was playing 1/2... Then, when it became too small, his teacher let him try with his violin and said he could just jump to full size and that's how we ended up with.
But, over the summer, I noticed that he is getting stronger and more comfortable. He finally managed to keep his violin up (I know it has been usual comment in this thread). He figured out that it is important not to get bow slides away from bridge.
He said his middle school classmates are also playing full size. (here middle school starts at 7th grade, not 6th grade like our neighborhood districts).
