I LOVE Jigs - they are lively!

But, I think what I enjoy most is the feel of 3 to a pulse.

Just came across a wonderful list of sheet music - ALL IN 6/8 TIME!

Maybe you'll be as surprised as I was, to find how many pieces/tunes you recognize.  I found MANY more than I could've imagined!

Sheet Music in 6/8 Time (8notes)

Oh, so THAT'S why I love 'The Teddy Bears' Picnic' & Metallic's 'Nothing Else Matters'! 😊  Guess I've loved 6/8 time ever since I was little... Itsy Bitsy Spider, Three Blind Mice, Pop Goes The Weasel, etc...

BUT, there's SO, SO MUCH MORE!!!

Strange, I've seen House of the Rising Sun written in 4/4 time 😖, and 3/4 time 😒, but it's the arrangements in 6/8 time 🤗 that sound/feel correct (like THIS, or THIS one)!

There's some other great examples of Rock & other popular music in 6/8 -

Understanding and Utilizing the 6/8 Time Signature for Mastering Rhythms (productlondon)

Mastering the 6/8 time signature can greatly enhance your rhythmic capabilities and musical expression.  This compound meter, with it's six beats per bar, encourages you to explore syncopation and complex rhythmic variations.

I want to learn more about the use of syncopation in 6/8 time!

The difference is not so much syncopation as the feeling. To help you understand I wrote out your example of , House of the Rising Sun in three different time signatures. However, tempo must be very different to achieve the exact same result in every case.
Mind you, that the preferred time signature is probably 6/8 played in two beats per measure.

@Fiddlerman -

Thank you so much for doing that for me!

Before I posted about it I had listened to 'House of the Rising Sun' in all 3 time signatures - and like you said about the 'feel', it was only the 6/8 that sounded like what the The Animals recorded (to me).

Most 6/8 tunes I run across are not syncopated (I did NOT mean to imply 'House of the Rising Sun' was).  I just got excited that someone suggested this time as a good place to explore syncopation, but I mostly see drummers doing syncopated 6/8 grooves... definitely got to wondering why.

The main place I find syncopated 6/8 music - Columbia.

The 'Bambuco' is a 6/8 syncopated type of their traditional music.

String Quintet of Rafael Godoy's Bambuco, 'Soy Colombiano'.

I sometimes play with an informal group with some members that seem to find jigs somewhat challenging and possibly unnatural. Personally, I don’t feel much difficulty with jigs -- but that might be only an indication of my own ignorance...

I’m currently working on the Gigue from JSBach’s Cello Suite #1. I have played it on mandolin and mandola for years, and it’s definitely fun to play on violin.

@Strabo -

That's wonderful!  I think that Cello Suite is really beautiful!

There IS some great Classical music in 6/8!

You just wouldn't play an Irish 'Jig' like Bach's 'Gigue'.  In ITM the eighth notes don't all have the same time value (Jig-i-ty, Jig-i-ty), plus have a little swing (IMHO).

Earlier this morning I found out about some Brahms in 6/8, I didn't know about!  And maybe even some indications of a little syncopation in it (ties across barlines and some rests where accented beats usually are).  Interesting, but I'll stick to 'Turlough O'Carolan' & my lower notes, for a little feel of Baroque.
