I know Crescendo has an accompaniment program that helps notate music that's played through the program.  I haven't tried it yet, but it might be worth a shot!  Plus both programs are free!

I pretty much gave up on Muse Score......I didn't have the patience for it with all the little tedious flubs within the program! LOL  lumpy-2134

I'm used to GP5 with the realistic sound engine.  It's so much easier (for me, anyways) to write music in that program!  Unfortunately, I lost it when my old computer crashed and didn't have the $60 for the new version.

I should be getting the newest version, GP6 soon!  This way, I'll be able to rewrite music and write background tracks again! dancing

Thank you for your recommendation. I will try some of those. Can't wait till I could make some backing tracks.

See how much more advance you are comparing to some folks here. Should be proud of yourself.

Yeah I played MuseScore for awhile then just switched to Finale 2011. I think its like comparing Gimp to Photoshop...they both do the same thing but PS is just more polished, which is why it is not free.

I like Finale so far and it was free, so i cant complain.

LOL, I would love to get a hold of the full version of Finale free to!  I had the trial version a while back, but I ended up going back to GP5 just because I was more familiar with it.

What do you guys think of Crescendo?  I'm still up in the air about that one, being a free program.

I had a friend that had it and wasn't using it anymore, so he let me take it. Though if you don't mind pirated material you can find it online, I've seen a few copies floating around.

What I really like about Finale is that you can export into SmartMusic. Its my main practice software when I feel like hookin up my mic and checking my timing and intonation.  Now if it could only read PDF it would be perfect because then I wouldn't have to manually transcribe most of my tunes.

I don't know anything at all about music software so can't comment on that.

But I've been practicing this tune now. I wonder how many others besides Eric are practicing it after he introduced it? I figure about a month and I'll have it at presentable level based on how it's presently going. And I'm working on both versions too. Turns out the version with flats isn't any harder than the first, just gives different fingers a workout. (At least at my current level, entering month 8.)   :)

My guess is that there are quite a few people since it's a very nice tune. You sounded very good for entering month 8 and your intonation is excellent. I am also at 8 but just been working on my first tune. cheers

So far, I've been playing the 1st version/Cmaj. but with a little twist.  I drop everything down one string to match the video a bit.  For some reason, I like playing the song in that particular register.  And for some reason, I'm still struggling to get that darn melody in the 3rd part!  Soon.......VERY soon, I should have it! LOL

Cool EJK, looking forward to hearing it. I've tried the first few measures and also like it in the lower register.

The Irish tunes are coming along nicely. Tried to do a video last night but just couldnt shift my mind into music mode....maybe tonight...Swallowtail jig and either Mairi's wedding or Scarborough Fair.

Also @peanut gallery, when you two play at lower register it means that a fifth (transposing) down, right? Not an octave down from the written notation.

And please pardon my ignorance, is Scarborough Fair an Irish tune? I googled it but the result is very vague.

Thank you.

I dont think Scarborough Fair is Irish....I just heard it on Sunday and really liked it so I've been practicing it. From what I've found its just and old English tune. My music tastes are quite scattered.

Someone else will have to answer your other question, cause I have no clue.

Yes, I like that tune a lot, listened to it many years ago, just now I think it would sound nice on violin. What I gathered is that it's an old English tune as well, but may have some root in traditional Irish/Scottish song.

It sounds very nice on the violin I think. And you can sorta play it how you wish...hold notes longer, play it faster, toss in some ornaments if you want....give it the feeling you want it to have. At least thats my opinion.coffee

Scarborough Fair, from what I've learned, is an English ballad from the 18th century.  From I understand, the main influence of the Scarborough Fair was a Scottish ballad, "The Elfin Knight" from 1670.

Scarborough Fair has a pretty cool story to it to!   Correct me if I'm wrong.....

If memory serves me right, an elf like creature threatens to kidnap a beautiful woman to be his lover unless she can perform several impossible tasks such as making him a shirt without a thread and washing it in a dry well.

.....I think that description was of "The Elfin Knight" though.

I found these lyrics for Scarborough Fair:

Are you goin' to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine.

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt (On the side of a hill in the deep forest green).
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground).
Without no seams nor needlework (Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain).
Then she'll be a true love of mine (Sleeps unaware of the clarion call).

Tell her to find me an acre of land (On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves).
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Washes the grave with silvery tears).
Between salt water and the sea strands (A soldier cleans and polishes a gun).
Then she'll be a true love of mine.

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather (War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions).
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (Generals order their soldiers to kill).
And gather it all in a bunch of heather (And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten).
Then she'll be a true love of mine.

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine.

Honestly, it reminds me a bit of "The Irish Washer Woman" which I'm still trying to play! LOL  ......I just can't get my bow and fingers to move that fast yet!  I can it slowly though! :D

EJ, you are correct - these are the lyrics from Simon and Garfunkel - Scarborough Fair/Canticle. The lyrics in parentheses are the Canticle lyrics, and the first part of each line are the Scarborough Fair lyrics.

Now, back to the original thread topic -

How soon can we see a Hårgalåten practice video? Since I am out of commission for the forseeable future, I must fiddle vicariously through you folks.

I plan to soon!  We finally got a new computer with a camera!  The only problem is, is that it's a desk top and not very mobile.  If things go smoothly, we'll have a new house soon and a dedicated music room!  Then I'll really be able to crank out videos again!

Wait......out of commission??!?!  Are you okay?!?  I hope all is well!!  I definitely know what that's like!!  surprised

I have a bum shoulder that was almost better, then I got carried away and reinjured it. cry I did manage to get in a good 3 or 4 minutes of fiddlin' before I was down for the count, though.

I am jealous of your potential music room. Good luck with the house, and I look forward to your videos!
