Every so often, I have to challenge myself to reach the next level of playing. In the past, it's been tunes like Ashokan Farewell, The Girl I Left Behind Me, the Bolling Green version of My Old KY Home, Irish Washerwoman, Kingdom Come (Jubilo), et.
If I don't challenge myself, my practice time seems less meaningful and a bit redundant.
So, I'm going to attempt another one of my favorite songs that I thought I'd never be able to play! The Tam Lin Reel. I love that style of fiddle playing and want to learn more! I also have a list of Ciprian/Gypsy tunes I want to learn, but those will come in time!
Any advice on how to approach this song? I know there is a ton of bow rocking and 5 note rolls....both things I really need to work on!
Also, what's everybody else currently challenging themselves with? I love seeing and reading about everybody else's current projects! It gives me ideas on how I could move forward and improve!
Cheers,
EJ

Hi EJ.
Currently I am learning some new songs to play with a new fiddle friend. She is an expert. I am a greener. We are playing Star of the County Down, Snowdeer, and Flowers of Edinburgh. I haven't tried the latter two but have played SOTCD a lot this morning.
I find picking a new song is a great way to expand. I do have to be careful not to just learn songs and force note reading, bowing, scales etc to my training.
But a new song and rhythm is perfect for me to stay excited and learn.
Congrats. Look forward to hearing soon.

That's awesome, Toni!
I really wish I had someone near me to fiddle along with! Hopefully, one of my friends will be picking up a violin soon. I can't wait! It always helps to have some else to play along with!
I actually learned the Civil War era version of SOTCD a while back! Such a beautiful song! The version I learned was called Southern Soldier Boy, but the music is almost identical.
As far as Tamlin goes, this was the first time in my short year of playing that my bow arm is aching! Granted, my right shoulder had to be surgically repaired twice, but this was the first time I had to take a break for shoulder pain! LOL I think the booooow-rocking had something to do with it! It doesn't help when my fingers get a all criss-crossed on the fingerboard either! LMAO
Hey, maybe I can put both those songs together like this!
