Hello everyone!
In chat and on the forum there seem to be a lot of us learning and playing Ashokan Farewell. We were talking on chat last night and thought it might be fun to learn together. A Violin -a- Long.
WE can post versions of the songs, and tips for the ornamentation. There is no time frame, anyone can join in at any time. And if you already play the song and would like to share a video, we would love to see you play.
Feel free to add ideas to this project. Have a lot of fun.
Cheers,
Toni
ps... There will be tab versions coming also so if anyone wants to play a long with tab we should be able to accommodate.
***We will hold off on critique for the project, however if someone asks for help, feel free to offer help.

Aloha @coolpinkone,
This is a good project. Have you tried out my transcription of Jay's version of his song? I haven't tried to play any of it, but he did it all in 1st position, so we should, in theory, be able to play it. I can play the melody, but haven't tried the ornaments yet. That might get "interesting" rather quickly.
How does this chat thing work? I'm in Hawaii, so I'm currently six hours behind EST and 3 hours behind PST (when y'all fall back, I'll only be 5 and 2 hours back, respectively). What time do y'all get together? I mean, I'm not very good at this point, but would like to be able to play with other people. BTW, not to sound too newbish, what is a Violin-a-long?

Hi Hi
Violin - a - long is a made up term. In knitting groups we have knit-a-longs.. we call them a KAL. So I just made that up as a term.. (we can change that if needed). Corny sounding .. I know.
I haven't tried the music you posted yet.
Chat is just a messaging place.. if you look on the where it says fiddle chat.. it is just members talking but nothing audio or nothing live. Stop by and jump in the conversations, you and all are always truly welcome.
Aloha!
Toni

@Tucson1 here is the sheet music.
this one is all in first with no double stops.
http://8notes.com/scores/3159.asp (thank you @RockingLR33 )
We welcome all versions of Ashokan. Since we are all playing at our own levels. So for those working on the DS and slides and 3rd position version. Please feel comfortable to post those also.

Everyone is welcome to join. I hope beginners feel comfy too... even a line or two of the song can be learned .. and since there is no time frame... this is just a place to play and talk about it, I hope every can post.. Tab, sheet, by ear... any means to making good sounds with our violins.
If we have any brave souls... even very short tutorials made by members would be nice... or long.. but you know.. some times people like to see the fingering happen. There is a ton of youtube stuff. I don't usually post a lot of outside tutorials here on FM, so it would be super cool to have our own vids and tutorials. (just random thoughts.. not rules... )
I hope we have a lot of ideas and fun. Happy Fall.
Love and Peace

@KindaScratchy ... Any versions of sheet and yes... Performances. All things Ashokan!
@Ferret .. Wow. You go!!!
I am already having fun. I practiced for a bit on Ashokan. I have a few combos of the easy version that are tricky for me... I am wondering if a double stop would be easier than some of the combos.. Or third. I am excited for this so I can try options. Normally I don't "try" things out well.

Great idea Toni!! Yay. Ashokan is my very first go to song when I pick up the fiddle. I've been looking at ornamentation as well.
This is on of my favorite versions with Jay, Molly, and their kids.
Opportunity is often missed because it wears suspenders and looks like hard work.

@KindaScratchy and @fiddlestix - I can't choose between Doc-and-the-Lady or the Jim McKillop rendition - (in terms pf preference) but it just goes to show how people can take the music as written down, then "make it their own" and "own it" so to speak, ending up with a subtly different "feel" to the piece.
I found a few versions when I started out practicing this piece, but both these are new to me - thanks folks !
I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh -
Please make your own, different mistakes, and help us all learn :-)

@coolpinkone you are very welcome for the sheet music...This is such an awesome idea! how did we not do this before??! I love this piece, and i actually promised my father i would learn it when i first started to play violin! this is such a wonderful idea!!! (can you tell i'm excited?
As most of you have probably already seen...here is my clip i posted a few day's ago... https://fiddlerman.com/forum/c.....-farewell/
I'm so excited that so many people are interested in this song as i do truly think it is such a wonderful piece. And like @BillyG said that is such a great song to really make it your own! I think its a piece so many people can relate to and just put so much feeling into!!! So now i must go practice so i can get the whole song down, and then hopefully slowly add ornamentation!!!

Hi all,
Attached is another version with a little more ornamentation (sorry the quality is not all that great). If you don't want to play all of the ornamentation you could use bits and pieces of it to add to the version you are playing.
