@Ginnyg > maybe others who have had success will help. I'm game for anything cause anything helps me learn > But > don't have the ticket for this one yet.

Aw, I just found this post today. I know what I want to do for it but won't have a chance to record anything until Monday afternoon. :/ Will I still be able to participate?

With hesitance I'm giving my thoughts and input on this matter. Here is another example of a “spur of the moment” idea. No 'ahead' planning. Some member's are finding out about this three day's before judging begin's. I think there should be more time for the entrie' to prepare for the competition. A period of time for them to prepare, record and enter. Maybe two week's from Monday,,, say, June 22nd, let the judging begin.
Bracket competition is nothing more than process of elimination. Example: If there are only four (4) entrie's, all four play their own piece, the two best of the four play again and only one of those two will win. If this is going to be like the last competition then the person with the most friend's and relative's will win, hand's down. ( that contest did get corrected to the rightfull winner). In my opinion, the judging should be done by unbiased judge's, say, Pierre, his brother (Dan), son and or daughter. A judging panel.
If you are going to increase playing / experience time from one (1) year to five (5) year's, (as Pierre was thinking ) the person who has only been playing for one year doesn't have much of a chance against the more experienced player of , say 2, 3, 4, or 5 year's. And seeing there is only one Carbon Fiber bow being awarded, the one year player may as well not even enter. If you're going to extend the experience limitation's then there should be more categorie's as to player experience which would require more than one CF bow or other prize's.
Personally, I'm not going to enter into it because, again, the rule's are so vague and I don't know which experience level I would fall under. I began playing when I was 4, played for 6 year's, quit and have picked up the violin probably 15 time's over the past 60 year's, but have only been back playing steady for about 2 year's now. If it weren't for Fiddlerman, I probably would have quit again, but I stay interested now.
So, those are my thought's.
Ken.

Yes Ken, good points.
We had thought of those as well. Yes, for very small competitions, the possibility of bias is real. This site was envisioned as an entertainment site, so the hope is once we reach a critical mass, the effects will be minimized. As well, everyone can invite their friends and family to join -- which will make the competitions more popular.
There will eventually be controlled leagues, so the league admin, Pierre, will be able to control who belongs, and who votes in the competition.
Currently, Pierre can also "qualify" the entries, by removing from competition those entries that are not appropriate to the competition (by age, experience), or even spam, or competitors who are inappropriate (nude or vulgar players).
Bias doesn't exist strictly for friends and family, think of the "Susan Boyle" effect. It is for this that competition admins can set up the competitions as "blind", or "blind" with reveal. The problem with family bias won't be so bad with a blind competition, especially if the admin can remove entries that try to defeat the "blindness".

To change your registration to entrant, just go to "Account/Modify Account" and change to "Competitor". You'll still be able to vote.
To those who don't yet have an account, it seems the emailer is not working and you're not receiving the email link. I'm working on fixing it.

I really like the idea of this competition. I know this has spurred me on these last couple of days to learn a new piece, and really work at it.
I don't see a problem with a short time to prepare. I think that would really showcase your abilities. I found a song that was a little more complex than I've been playing, and in a few days have it about 80% ready to video.
I do agree with Ken that competing all levels from a day 1 player to a 5 year veteran might not be ideal. Perhaps it could be done in different competitions. This one for 1 year players, next one for 2 year players... etc. I've been playing about a month- and I'd be glad to enter with other first year players, but against someone who's been playing 4 or 5 years...yikes! I'd probably be hesitant to join in.
But all in all, I think this is a really Good idea!

LOL,,, In response to Pierre and Dan " the-man ". I understand now what's going on. When I first read the initial post, I'm thinking, wow, I wonder if Pierre know's some guy is donating a CF bow in Fiddlerman's name. I didn't even know Pierre had / has a brother lol.
Please don't take what i'm saying here (or in the previous post) out of text and think that i'm upset about anything, actually I think now that it's kinda humorous, as I've found out in the past how 'typing' word's can really get misconscrewed-up for how one is saying it. A personal introduction probably would have been the way I would have began this thread because it is Dan's very first post, I never put the two name's together, (Holstein) as being related. Tell us who you are, do play violin or any other instrument, I'm sure you do, being related to the "Master", how about a little background.
What I meant by, "spur of the moment" is that, you guy's may have been setting this up for several year's, but to us here in the forum, it's an off the top of the head type thing, Fiddlerman member's were unaware of. Would be like a sailboat race starting Monday, sailing from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West and had to be there by the following Monday. Uh Oh,,, I have a sailboat but just got it yesterday and don't know anything about sailing yet, I don't have much time to learn and don't even have a crew yet, how can I be ready in such a short period of time. Hypothetical situation, but a goofy example.
Great idea though, here's hoping it will pan out..
Ken.

I was overlooked... I'm out of town until Monday and can't submit anything until that night at the very earliest. Will it be closed to submissions or will I still be able to join?
(Edit: Meh, whatever. I'll do my best and make a video and submit it. If I'm too late and don't get to participate, at least I tried and hey! I'll have another video to share. So count me in!)

I also did not get the confirmation email, however, I was still able to log in, so it didn't seem to matter. After I registered, I waited a while, then just went back to the site and tried to log in. Presto, I'm in. Not sure if that's working for everyone. But just a thought.
More thoughts: I think a standard song would be a good idea for future contests, or a selection of pieces of varying difficulty within the specified experience range. This would give competitors some opportunity to pick a piece that showcases their individual skills, or challenge themselves with something new.
Lastly, experience categories would be better than wide open experience levels. Just my thoughts.

Some of us who registered as voters due to the initial one year thing may want to enter now that the rules have changed--how would we do that?Maybe just start the whole thing over, or stop it until rules, etc. get firmed up?
@Steve You can modify your account settings once you've logged in.
