****Project has Ended****

I’ve arranged a version for Star of The County Down, including parts for Violin, Viola & Cello.  I will put submitted videos together, & post it here on the Forum.

There are links below to the sheet music & click tracks.

How to Submit Your Video

You will need to upload your video to YouTube (Note: You need to have a YouTube Account).

  1. Upload your video to YouTube. When saving your video, use the naming convention listed below.  Note: When you save your video to YouTube, please set visibility to Unlisted.
  2. Send me a Private Message (PM) via the Forum with your YouTube URL address for your video. Please ensure it is the address for your specific video, & not just your channel.
  3. If you cannot send a PM (i.e., do not yet have PM privileges on the Forum), use the YouTube Submission Form linked below.
  4. I will send you a confirmation PM back (or email, if you chose to provide it on the YouTube Submission Form) to let you know I have it.

In addition to messaging you back a confirmation, I will have a Status spreadsheet posted that you can check throughout the time of the project (see link below).

Video File Naming Convention:

Before you submit your video, please use this standardized naming convention for your file.  I won’t use it if it is not in this format.

CountyDown_Forum username_part abbreviation

For example, CountyDown_SharonC_V1

Part abbreviations:

V1 – Violin 1

V2 – Violin 2

V3 – Violin 3

VA1 – Viola 1

VA2 – Viola 2

C1 – Cello 1

The Rules:

1. You must use a click track provided (see link below)—just like FM Group Projects, I have to match the videos up with a matching tempo.

Also, you will need to listen to the click track via headphones, earbuds, etc., so that you can hear the click track but it is not audible in you video.

This means you need two devices to capture the video—one to record the video, the other to provide you the click track while you play.

2. You must use the sheet music provided. No improv.

3. Your video must have at least 8 seconds before you start playing the first note & 8 seconds after you stop playing the last note.

4. You must submit your video via YouTube. Additionally, the video file you submit must use the file name convention I’ve indicated above, & the file visibility needs to be set to Unlisted on YouTube.

5. Do not submit more than one video for an individual part. In other words, ensure the video you send me is your FINAL VERSION.  Please, no multiple submissions for the same part.

However, if you want to submit videos for more than one part, you can do so.  And you may submit videos for these different parts at different times.

Note: Only one video per member will be shown in the final project.  Other video parts submitted will be included in the final project as audio only.

No audio-only submissions permitted.  If you submit videos for more than one part, please indicate which of your submissions you want as your video in the final project—the others will be used as audio only.  If you do not indicate which submission you want as the video from the ones you have made, I will choose.

6. Ensure your video shows your face & you playing your instrument. If you record your video with your phone, please use Landscape Mode. Try to center yourself and your playing area (think of the your arm movements, the bow, etc., ) in the camera view.

7. Use this Forum thread to post questions, discuss, etc., or PM me (if you cannot PM, there is a Question Form you can use—see link below). DO NOT post your email address here.  DO NOT email, message, etc., Fiddlerman questions about this project—this is a Members Group Project, not a Fiddlerman Group Project.

Deadline for Video Submissions:

Last day/time to submit your video (i.e., your video is posted to YouTube, and you have PM’d me or sent the Submission Form with the link) is 12 September 2022, 1pm EDT (Eastern Daylight Time).

@ELCBK  There are different ways to play the tune--I know most versions out there are a fast 4/4 March, but I prefer a slow 3/4 Waltz.

@SharonC -

Just havin' fun with you... I've already started on it. 😊

Thanks for another GP - all the parts really sound great together!

AND, YOUR PLAY-ALONG SHEET MUSIC IS FABULOUS!!!

Btw, I PM'd Ilona, to make sure she sees this before getting too busy again.

@ELCBK  Thanks smile

I wanted to mention about the click tracks:

The click tracks I currently have posted are for each of the individual parts as well as one for the score with the metronome (just like last project).

Also, I added some additional tracks that may be useful for parts that play more of the harmony.  I have found it useful to hear the melody when practicing a harmony part to see how my part fits in.  The additional tracks I added (with the additional parts playing more softly):

Violin3 with Violin1 & Viola1

Viola2 with Violin1 & Viola1

Cello1 with Violin1 & Viola1

If you think some other combination can be helpful for you (can be click track or video play-along), just let me know—I can create & post it.smile

As an aside, I found it interesting that Chris Haigh, day before yesterday, posted a video of learning to play Star of the County Down, both as a waltz and as a march. His version is in the key of G.

I couldn't believe it when it came up in my "Notification" tab on YouTube.

@JohnG  Nice video showing the two versions!

I’m curious what you all think – you like the March or the Waltz version better?  Note: I'm not changing the arrangement for the projectsmile, just wanting to know what people are thinking.

BTW, when I was making the arrangement, I started in the key of G, transposed to D, and then settled on C (thought it worked better with the Viola & Cello parts).

I'm definitely in the waltz version camp. That is probably because I could probably not keep up with the march version and I love the flow of the waltz version.

@ELCBK  Look at it as an opportunity to work on phrasing laugh

@SharonC -

🤣

I can live with the speed because you've made EVERY part interesting!

In fact, this is the 1st time I might play more than 1st Violin & 1st Viola!

Kudos to you!

Btw, isn't this the LAST place people should be thinking about phrasing?

Don't you want everyone to follow exactly the way it's laid out on the click track?

I’ve included dynamics in this project.  Here’s a video that gives a basic explanation of dynamics:

Also, here’s a chart that generalizes volume levels, to give you an idea.

Thanks for organising this Sharon! I hope to participate this time.

Coincidentally, this lovely version of the tune by Sheku Kanneh Mason appeared on Instagram:

Thanks for pointing that out - I love everything Sheku Kanneh-Mason plays.

...he'll be in the USA in October.

Glad you'll be joining the GP!

@Colette Glad to have you join in!

Thanks for the link—Sheku Kanneh-Mason version is beautiful—I see it’s the 1st song on his new album.   I was looking for it on Amazon music, but they don’t have it available yet.
