I'm not sure what the term is in Italian or French or any other language but I was wondering if anyone has run into this practice of playing the strings with the edge of the bow hair?

In this video of Hillary playing in this concert you can easily watch her play this incredible music on the edge of the hair.

FM, can you comment on this? and... have you played there as well, on the edge of the hair that is.(?)

I can't recall which video it is, but FM talks about turning the bow, using the side of the hair and playing close to the neck to get a very soft/quiet sound (as opposed to playing close to the bridge with full hair to be loud).

FM mentions it on the Swan Lake tutorial video.
I have seen other occasions where the up ow and downbox are played with the now in this different orientation. Why?facepalm

Here's the video I was thinking of... he gets to the "playing softly" part towards the end.

LOL, you guys have me pegged.

I hate watching myself play on these videos. I rarely watch a video twice.
Thanks for the posts.

I see a lot of playing on the edges.  I am been utilizing this when I can't get the sound to come out right.  I watch my teacher do it in awe...she sounds wonderful...

The video, many of hers in fact are a great example of left hand placement ala another post and of bowing technique. I love watching her play. Incidentally there is a vid of her playing for the Pope and I swear it could be out of starwars! He looks like the emporer sitting there with all that red around him, ah but I digress. (no offense to any caths out there.) just sayin.
