Even BEGINNERS can LEARN to PRODUCE BETTER SOUND WITH a BOW
on ANY Instrument!
Do you have a Cat, a Dog - or BOTH?
...at least some point in your life?
How do you pet a Cat?
Do you pet a larger Dog different than a Cat?
How about petting a Puppy or Kitten vs. a grown Cat or Dog?
NOW...
For VIOLINISTS, think of bowing your strings as petting these critters: E string - a Kitten, A string - an adult Cat, D string - a Cocker Spaniel, and G string - a Dalmation.
For VIOLISTS: step up the animal size a little bit and imagine petting the C string like an adult male German Shepherd.
For CELLISTS: petting animals even bigger yet, imagine the C string as having fun with a Saint Bernard!
You MUST treat each string differently when bowing!
This video by Billy Tobenkin is uniquely GREAT for IMPROVING SOUND on VIOLIN & VIOLA, as well as Cello!
Billy Tobenkin is a Los Angeles-based cellist who specializes in teaching adult learners. As a professional cellist who started playing the cello from scratch at 25, he is in a unique position to help others, like him, who found the cello later in life. He has developed strategies from his own musical journey to accelerate the learning process, and he is here to share them with you.
...gotta LOVE analogies! 🤗

The way I ruffle up my cats when petting them (they're SOOOO FLUFFY), wonder if it helps my bowing for Strathspeys & Cape Breton music. 🤭 Once the the humidity starts dropping, I'll have to get back to thinking long, slow, bow strokes when I pet them - so my Kitties don't build up static electricity.
So, besides the bowing, got to thinking about what my cats might want me to learn.
🤔... what music would YOUR cats want YOU to learn to play?
I'm pretty sure mine would LOVE this song! Mimi Rabson directed the performance for this video. I've thoroughly enjoyed every Fiddle Hell workshop of Mimi's I have attended! She will be teaching MORE at the LIVE FIDDLE HELL FESTIVAL in November (Mimi Rabsen workshops)! Check out the video description to find more info on the 'BREO' - a string ensemble that is free and open to all greater Boston area adult and high school string players!
"You Don't Own Me"!
This would also be a great pick - with it's lower tones (induces purring)!
"Viola Purrlude in D" - Noam Oxman (Sympawnies). See the video description for info on the cat this was composed for.
