I'm back to focusing on playing double stops & chords again, so like usual - I'm also trying to see who I can get to join me! (sorry?)

"Playing Strong Chords" - here's some common mistakes & how-to fixes from Laurie Niles! (Violinist.com)

How to play chords on Violin - Photos & Fingering Charts.

7 Violin Chord Chart Diagrams for Beginners (with Photos)

A Major - A, E, C#, A

D Major - A, F#, D, A

G Major - G, D, B, G

F Major - C, F, A, F

A Minor - A, E, C, A

E Minor - G, E, B, G

B Minor - B, F#, D - A  (they don't show anything on the E string for this chord, but you can cover the D on the A string & A on the E string with one finger for a double stop)

There's a lot of room to experiment with playing double stops & chords, but best to start with a foundation of even sounding notes & string crossings (I'll be working on this forever). 😏

"Playing Chords" - techniques from Julia Bushkova!

"Double Stops" - exercises with Fiddlerman!

Some helpful tips to get good sound on chords - even if you aren't an 'advanced' student!

For everyone playing Violin, Viola & Cello - playing arpeggios, also known as 'broken chords', gets you to hear chord sounds & their intervals - great place to start or freshen up in practice!

"Training to play chords on Viola" - these play-along arpeggios also help with reading sheet music in Alto clef!

Here's some tips for VIOLA from Andrew Hugill's site! He's got a link to a series of double stops written out - you can click in each one to hear it played!  Andrew also has tips & short videos for playing triple & quadruple stops.

There's something for everyone in this thread - please share your favorite tips!

For a little something extra, thought I'd also share a little about our chord-loving, bowed cousin... the Viola da Gamba (check out the great info & beautiful sound bites at the link)!

Think it would be great to see some cellists jump over to this elegant instrument!

Here's some basic Viola da Gamba playing info, plus a tutorial for "Playing chords" - with Sam Stadlen!

SEVEN note chords are possible!!!

Wanted suggest more video tutorials on Double Stops for Violin, Viola & Cello - since we play many 2-note chords.

Joy Lee - 15 Great Double Stop Video Tutorials for VIOLIN

Unfortunately, for Violists, I find a lot of video exercises/tutorials for Violin & Viola LUMPED TOGETHER.

Still helpful, but they usually show exercises in Treble Clef, which doesn't help us Violists learn to read Alto Clef any faster.  We also don't get any reference for how these double stops should SOUND on the Viola - it's not just about the intervals!  I think we need to hear the Viola C & G strings played more since all strings are bowed differently for optimal tone, video tutorials played on VIOLA can provide vital visual & aural information to help us learn!

Mark Pedus has a good video tutorial specifically for VIOLA double stops!

https://youtu.be/3tBKzv8q2MI

Amber is playing on VIOLA for this video on Double Stops - she shows finger patterns, then goes over double stops, including the C string!  A lot of talk, so I set the video where she begins playing. (lol)

https://youtu.be/_SKsH4FxWyw?t=798

I like this video from Consordini on CELLO Double Stops.  He talks a little on chords & addresses less talked about points - like getting used to the different string thicknesses.

MUCH extra info/tips in the video description!

Full play-along practice of Double Stops on Cello with Ilia Laporev!  It's not all double stops, some intervals, too - helpful overview before each section.  Link in the description for the free printable sheet music used in this video, plus more!
