Someone says, "YOU NEED TO PRACTICE", "Go Practice the Violin".

What happens?  HOW DO YOU FEEL when you hear these words?

😖😕😬😱😧😵😵‍💫🙄😒😯😓

...'I' don't feel good, interested, or motivated when I hear it - in fact, I feel just the opposite... maybe even guilty just for feeling that way!

💥Realistically💥- we ALL LOVE playing the Fiddle/Violin (Viola & Cello) - it makes us FEEL GOOD!!!  Why else would we be doing it?!

So what's the deal?

Self-defeating thoughts, beliefs & behavior... any that prevent, reduce, or limit our ability to achieve a desired outcome - often stemming from a negative, or unrealistic, outlook.

Many times it's hard to identify these kind of thoughts & behaviors - which is actually the first step in being able to change!

If you 'tell' yourself you need to 'go practice violin', it's like saying go do a chore, a dismal task - something to tackle, a necessary evil... certainly nothing pleasant!

AND, there's NO NICE SYNONYM for 'practice'!  Drill, exercise, train, workout, etc... haven't even found an adequate euphemism!

We have quite a few threads, here on the forum, that explain why it's important to 'practice' regularly, how to 'practice' efficiently, how to avoid 'practice' pitfalls... but we start right off with a word, a concept, a feeling - that seems pulled from the center of some dark cloud!

How can we change this?

For a start, we can CHANGE THE WORD, to something more akin to "spending quality time getting to know our lovely friend better"!

Words of a positive concept can change our outlook.

Let's face it - we don't usually think of our relationships with our loved ones as 'work'.  If a friend calls (or stops by) you'll take a few minutes for a conversation... even if you're busy, tired, or don't feel good.

Why?  Because WE FEEL BETTER interacting with them.

'Love', 'Friend', 'Companion' - all have that positive power, but I have something different in mind... 🤭

Hygge!

<a href="

I don't think anyone can feel anything negative about 'Hygge', or in saying this word!  🤭🥰

Instead of 'practice' time - HYGGELIG TIME!

Basically means the same in Danish and Norwegian, but Wikipedia says it became a core part of Danish Culture.  It's a noun and a verb, but 'Hyggelig' is the adjective form.

It's used in greetings, too.

In both Danish and Norwegian, 'hygge' refers to "a form of everyday togetherness", "a pleasant and highly valued everyday experience of safety, equality, personal wholeness and a spontaneous social flow".

The noun 'hygge' includes something nice, cozy, safe and known, referring to a psychological state.  The Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen has studied the positive effect of 'hygge' on Danish society.

CollinsEnglish Dictionary defines the word as "a concept, originating in Denmark, of creating cozy and convivial atmospheres that promote wellbeing".

Some comfy slippers, a candle, loose clothes... a few minutes enjoying getting intonation to sound how you want for a tune on the fiddle!

Definitely open to hearing other word suggestions!

Not a bad idea if everyone found their own 'special' word - making the connection to your instrument even stronger!

...btw, I can talk about this because I already put 'time' in on my fiddle today! 😉  Full disclosure, I actually feel 'practice' is more like meditation, because it can take my mind off other things, but I don't feel the word fits the task very well.
