Here's a little exercise I've just written, prompted by a piece and an étude that required something similar. It tests your ability to shift between 1st and 3rd position, and your ability to anticipate (dependent on speed), your hand-shapes and intonation once you are in position, with alternating bowing. The rhythm should be kept rock-steady.

@Gordon Shumway Thanks. That's the type of exercise that helps me. Short and with a purpose. 

In looking at it, I am assuming the second measure is done on the A string, right? I am really not that “well tuned” to theory, working on it. 

I am also assuming these exercises could be worked down each pair of two strings so you can do it on all strings, correct?
