OK, Christmas presents are usually wrapped and put under the tree but my daughter got me this little jewel at a doctors' estate sale for $40. and decided to make it a present for me. I was flabergasted and delighted since I'm all about old instruments and how they sound and trace out with analysis software.

The bow had the tip broke off and the violin had gut strings on it! It has roman numerals hand written inside it that mean 1956 but other than that, nothing to indicate the maker. The name that was inside was written as:  R6Roberts

Interesting that it has a 2-piece FRONT and a 2-piece BACK. The tailpiece was held on with a real gut string! I suspect it's around 50 yrs old or so but does anyone know anything more than google can provide?

That is a beauty you got there, cdennyb, a lovely Christmas present.

I'm with you about old violins as there is some special about those aging wood sound characteristics/qualities that newer instruments don't come close.

That top is from a very nice spruce, Carpathian/Alpine type. Should be very mellow/sweet and resonant.

I'm happy for you. What a great present.

Merry Christmas.

About the top.  Most violins are made with two piece tops.  I wonder if this could be an aprentise violin.  Thr R6 could mean this is number 6 that this person made.

I was going to say the same thing Kevin. We have mostly two piece tops in our shop. :-)
Looks like it could be a winner Dennis. Look forward to hearing it after you do your magic. smile

I'd like to learn more about what you do for the sound and trace analysis software, sometime. What software do you use, how do you record the instrument, what do you look for, etc. I know about one person, Joseph Nagyvary of http://www.nagyvary.com, who does that for his violins.

Thanks,
