This is just an anecdote, nothing serious intended, but there is a caveat.
Yesterday I was on the train home from orchestra with another violinist who is heavily into flutes and I mentioned that if I were still an amateur oboist I'd buy the cheapest pro model which is a Rigoutat at 6k (the same as my teacher's viola bow!), so as an amateur violinist that was my top budget for violin and bow, but some people think that the investment value is more important, so amateurs shouldn't have a limit, and he said, yes, but - last year he was enquiring and was a offered a violin for 100k that had been reduced from a million because its attribution had changed!
I think I'll stick to my 6k theory.
