Just changed the strings on my fiddle -- it took all of 10 minutes. What a pleasure!
Changing strings on a mandolin is a grueling task. There are eight strings, of course, and their tension is much higher than a violin. Bringing the four courses up to pitch and in sync is slow drudgery. Can’t go too fast or you get a nice big BANG when the string snaps.
My other fiddle has mechanical pegs and it’s somewhat easier (I guess) -- especially if you like to crank, crank, crank those pegs.
But this was a joy! I’ll have them up to pitch by later today and it will be wunnerful to hear those new strings sing out!
Gotta appreciate the little things...

changing mandolin strings is one of the more irritating musical maintenance activities. The most difficult thing qbout violin string changing to me is getting the ball end to seat in the fine tuner slot. sometimes making sure the string doesnt touch side of pegbox is a hassel, but overall changing violin strings has been the easier of the instruments.
Howd you like to work on a piano! now THAT has got to be the king. Jim can testify to that one.
