Hi All
As I was practicing a couple of nights ago, I had my A and D pegs unwind on me. The weather was cool-ish maybe 2°C for about a week and then it jumped to about 17°C for a bit (which is really weird for December here, but that's another discussion ). In the grand scheme of things not a huge deal, but the questions are:
I guess that the pegs unwinding is a good thing, because if they didn't the pegs or the peg box might be damaged? That might be similar to the hide glue giving away rather than cracking the top or bottom plate.
Is there a way to help the violin to acclimatize when the seasons change? Or is it just violin life?
Thanks for any responses and Merry Christmas!
John

Alot of different topics thoughts shared here in addition to what elcbk shared...
for what its worth, even though I feel I do a good job on keeping humidity/temp stable in the room I keep instruments in...There was a day earlier this fall we had a big temp swing in consecutive days and went from a/c one day to heat.. I didnt think much of it ( forgot to start humidifier) but both violins had very loose strings when I went to play next. On one the pegs completeIy unwound.. I just tuned them both back up. Seems like the one scenerio that does it for me is sudden changes like that. I used to keep them cased but they stay on stand now. Ive finally decided Ill do my best to watch humidity/temp but Im not as obsessive about it now.

@ELCBK, @ABitRusty:
Thanks for the info. My forever violin is only 10 months old, so I hope the slipping is not because of a bad peg. Rumour has it that Santa is bringing me a new set of strings for Christmas so I'll check the pegs and put peg paste on them when I change the strings.
