CF Bow: Let it down? Keep it up?
Does a carbon fiber bow really need to be let down?

In a past life I built bamboo fly rods, great and sensitive instruments for fishing. In construction, gentleheat is used to straighten out any kinks in the shaft. Anglers are enjoined to store their rods in a perfectly straight state, lest the rod take a “set”.

Common wisdom is that pernambuco violin bows must be let down when not in use. I presume that the rationale is the same: that the desired shape of the stick may be lost.

But modern anglers store their carbon fishing rods in any old shape. Nobody cares if their rods are straight or bent when they leave them. And the method of storage doesn’t seem to make any significant difference: I cannot recall ever hearing a modern fisherman complaining about a bent fishing rod.

And what of carbon fiber violins bows? Is there a good reason -- other than our valued tradition -- to let the stick down? Why not keep it tight? What could happen if the CF bow stick is left in an “operational” state?

@Strabo Maybe, it has something to do with relaxing the bow hairs, too? Also, maybe it releases the tension on the screw at the frog end of the bow?

It damages the hair keeping it tight all the time, hair has a certain amount of elasticity, which is lost if constantly under tension.

One of the dangers of keeping bow hair tightened is that the hairs contract if humidity decreases. This can break the stick.

@Strabo -

As far as fishing rods go, even stored haphazardly - I don't see how there would be any tension except it's own weight.

I've had occasion where I loosened the hair on my Arcus CF bow at night & the next day it was tight!  Don't think I'd worry at all, IF I hadn't seen with my own eyes how much a difference even 10% in humidity can change my bow hair.

🤔... think I'm more concerned about ruining the hair than my stick - but I'm not willing to try to break it just to prove a point.

...Fiddlerman already did that!!!

Good comments about the hair.

I do note that hair tension varies with changes in humidity and temperature. So I guess it makes sense to let the bow tension down in order to take care of the hair. The CF stick is very robust, as convincingly demonstrated by Fiddlerman. So the hair is surely a much more sensitive part of the bow.

I also realize that I don’t understand much about bow hair. Maybe I need to learn more about the hair, how exactly it works, how to take care of it, and so on.
