Hi there! I've got a new/old violin being fixed at the luthier right now. It's roughly from about 1900, maybe a little younger. There was a decrepit looking side-mount chin rest on it when I got it, the first thing they did was take it off. The ribs on that side were just a little bit wavy from the chin rest. They said it may be better to get a center-mount. My newer violin has an Edu chin rest that's kind of like a Stuber. I really like playing with it, it fits me just perfectly.

I was wondering if y'all knew of a center-mount chin rest that was similar to the Edu/Stuber. I've played with Guarneris before and they're way to low for me. I've also tried the Fleish but having my chin over the tailpiece is uncomfortable for me. Is there a center-mount elevated chin rest with a bump?

Maybe try a Berber. There's also the Wave chinrest, which is more expensive, but available in two different heights.

I also really like the Stuber, though now a days I mostly just play on whatever chinrest is on the instrument that I grab. 🥴

I haven't even thought about chinrests for 6 months, so whatever names I knew then I've forgotten now. Next time I think about them, I'll write it down in my diary/notebook. In the summer I will use a shoulder/chin cloth more to keep the sweat off and assume if the cloth is thick enough, the chinrest doesn't matter. There are 183 basic designs and nobody likes any of them. laugh

Just post a picture and I may know the name.

Thanks all for the replies! I actually got a Berber from fiddlershop and I'm trying it out right now. It's not exactly like my Edu but I think it'll work good enough.

Like a fool I only just realised I can adjust the height of my shoulder rest (and that only happened because I found a Chinese copy on Amazon for about $10 including shipping, so I bought it as a backup), so I'm not going to worry about the height of my chinrest.

Most shoulder rests are adjustable but unfortunately chin-rests are rarely adjustable. I guess it's logical though.
The SAS is adjustable but not their height.
