I was going to surprise Thomas with a new violin for Christmas but he wants to be involved in the decision making so I have some questions and I dont know if I should direct them to fiddlerman or everyone else. Here is a link to what I have narrowed it down to.....https://fiddlershop.com/collec.....lability=1 and I am leaning toward the Holstein Premium Bench Lord Wilton 1742 Violin. This will be the last violin upgrade for him for a few years and he is competing beginning this year in various competitions this year, so I want a violin that is good for solo playing.

Out of the ones in the link:

Which is the best for a soloist? We do not like the black one on the list btw.

If I can narrow it down to just two, would Pierre(or someone) do a video comparing the two choices for me?

When we have decided, we would like a bridge, strings that are good for solo performing and of course would pay extra if needed. But I do not know what significance a bridge plays in the softness of tone. So what bridge and strings to get?

Thank you in advance for helping me.

Talk to fiddler shop and let them  know what your looking for and your price range and Michel will make a comparison video of different fiddles for you to listen to, I would not rule out the ming fiddle they sound pretty good to me.

@JimandThomas, I would suggest you direct all of your questions to the Fiddlershop. Tell them, what you are looking for, and they can make a demo video for you, They were spot on with my recent upgrade to my very last upgrade, and have been each step of the way.

You can call them, email them or chat with them online. Go to Fiddlershop.com.

Hope this helps.

I just purchased a Lord Wilton, the middle level, but what I am looking for is not what Thomas is looking for. Gibbles did a wonderful test video of three violins for me, a few months ago. The Lord Wilton was added by Gibbles. I requested 2 violins in the test. The one Gibbles added, the Lord Wilton, that Gibbles added, based on what I described, was the perfect violin for me. Love it, but I won't comment on what others should get.

Fiddlershop is great and easy to order from. Just contact them. you will be very pleased you went that route.

Thanks everyone but I wanted to get imput from the other questions from the public as well before I contacted the shop. I like having various opinions first, so that I can ask the appropriate questions.

Well, @JimandThomas, my experiences purchasing from Fiddlershop have always been a breeze and very fun - the videos. The Lord Wilton that I have is lovely. As for your choices, I can't comment. I was interested in the middle level, not the top level.

My Lord Wilton has a lot of projection, lovely sound and it is extremely easy for me to play, which is why Gibbles put it into the list of my trial requests, He was exactly right.

For specifics on yours, those I can't help you with.

This line of violins are not outfits, you probably don't need all the items that come in an outfit, anyway.

I did not need the shoulder rest, did not add one to the order.

I did add a case because I was donating my Concert Deluxe that was being replaced along with the case, shoulder rest and chinrest to a local school orchestra.

I did want the Holstein Freedom Chinrest because I love it. So I added that to my order. I left the one that I installed on the Concert Deluxe on the Concert Deluxe for the new owner to be able to check out that chinrest.

I had a bow that I like, so I did not need that.

Hope this is helpful.

@JimandThomas

First of all, we really appreciate your interest in dealing with us and will make sure that you are happy in the end.

The Bench Holsteins are great quality instruments made in a few wonderful workshops that make instruments exclusively for us. Also a great value since they are essentially our instruments with no middle man involved.
We can, and would gladly play a few instruments of your choice on a video and allow you guys to listen to them before making your purchase. We do this frequently. If you want my advice, don't get hung up on which specific Bench violin model you want as they are all made in the same way. The patterns differ but the quality of wood, materials used, and bench makers are similar regardless of the model.

If you allow us the opportunity to test some of our bench models behind the scene. we could choose the ones that we like for Thomas and play a few on a video for you guys to choose from.

If you call customer service they will gladly set up a video approval for you. I can also do it if you like. If so, please send me a PM and we'll get going on that.
