Don't even ask how I found this - certainly wasn't looking.  Okay, I got reeled in with the photo. (lol)

These don't look like "F" holes!     COOL, 5-STRINGS, TOO!

This looks like a vielle, the medieval and early Renaissance ancestor of the violin family. It varied in size and shape, but the version most commonly seen in France had five strings and was about the size of a modern viola. (The viola is the original member of the violin family; the name violin is a diminutive.)

Here's a little on this history of the f hole:

As for the letters f and s... I'm reminded of a tongue-in-cheek aside I once saw in a law review article.

In the early modern period, many commentators wrote of guilty and innocent “perfons,” warning that “prefumptive evidences fhould be warily preffed.” What exactly a perfon is may be a fruitful fubject for further refearch.

Alexander Volokh, n Guilty Men, 146 U. Penn. L. Rev. 173 (1997).

@AndrewH -

That's funny!  And you are correct - it's a Vielle (caption w/photo in the article).

The fact the early S's looked like F's was pretty interesting to me and also getting into the reasons for the shape of the holes.

Ah, yes. I didn't see that there was a linked article earlier, because the forum abbreviated it.

@Gordon Shumway -

Guess I never should've asked.

Hadn't even occurred to me since we're supposed to steer clear of politics on this forum... and I understand why.
