Whn I looked at my viola this morning I noticed that overnight the G string had broken.

I've broken strings tuning before but have never had one break while the instrument was just sitting dunno

Seen it all. Done it all. Can't remember most of dunno ..... What was I saying???? facepalm

My brother-in-law's violin did that once, but it was on an older one that he hadn't used in almost a year. It's odd that yours did it overnight though. Better then than while you were playing I guess. smile

last year I had a Prelude (steel core) string break on the G position overnight while in the case... I accused my friend of messing with it and overtightening it but they claimed they never touched it! go figure...

Where did it break? At the nut, where it rests on the bridge, by the tail-piece?
