I never worry about too much rosin. Too little is a problem. With too little rosin applied to your bow you need to press hard at times to get a good sound. Too much is only bad for the mess it makes IMAO.
OK, if you are economical you may feel you are wasting money and if the rosin dust can cause allergies. I haven't heard of anyone being allergic to rosin dust though.

Now there's an idea. Hypoalergenic rosin. You can be the first to come out with it. You'll make a fortune.

@Fiddlerman.... Hi Pierre... So I see there are no issues with rosin as far as too much... A bit of dust ... Do you find that rosin builds up on the strings.  I am wondering if as a newbie, I don't bow  fast and my pressure is lighter.... Unlike some of those that really "tear it up". So maybe for newbies the rosin build up is worse?

I guess it seems there is always talk about the rosining and string cleaning from newer violinist (like me).  I am trying to find out if this is to be a focal point... Or good playing and bowing will take care of issues better than rosin?

I guess what I am saying (wondering) at the end of the day, rosin is the aid or tool... Bow pressure, speed, and smooth bow changes are more important???

If this makes sense.....

Simple, IMO ... if there is rosin built up on your strings, you can see it---the strings will look white and thick and fuzzy.  If you see that, wipe it off the strings, then try to notice whether it plays or sounds different.

For me, rosin does build up on the strings sometimes (depending on the weather and on how long it's been since I applied rosin), and yes, it does hurt the playability and the sound.  I usually wipe my strings about once or twice between applications of rosin to the bow.

Exactly Toni. Bow speed, pressure, contact point (location between the bridge and fingerboard) and proper technique for both making bow direction changes and articulations. All way more important than having too much rosin. Too little is like trying to carve something with a dull knife.

Long term rosin build-up is negative in many ways but many don't even care and still do great. Rosin build-up can actually cause a string to squeak or not resonate properly but it requires quite a bit for that.

Wipe your violins belly and strings after each session and you should be fine. Nigel Kennedy has no problem with excess rosin dust. roflolnigel-kennedy-Rosin-mess.jpgImage EnlargerNigel-Kennedy_heavy-rosin-dust.jpgImage Enlarger

Ha ha .. Thanks for the info Pierre.  I just want to sort of ( for myself) put the rosin thing to rest.... Or in perspective in my own personal progress.

Cheers!

I frequently clean the string's with alcohol to remove all residue and I never allow a "fiddler's" pile of rosin on the surface of the violin, it look's like hell and doesn't prove anything except to let other's know how lazy I am not to clean it off.

LOL! Really!? Someone thinks that he's cool because he has rosin all over the violin? That's brilliant! I should never wipe my violin since now! Maybe somebody will think that i'm cool too! Why nobody said that earlier!?surprised1st-place
