I have an opportunity to buy a 2007 Samuel Eastman v400 violin, but I can't find any information about it. It does not appear to be an equivalent of the Andreas Eastman 405. Does anyone know anything about this violin or what an equivalent Eastman violin would be?

In a Google search for Samuel Eastman violins, this came up. It might offer some information.

It would be great if you would introduce yourself to the forum. You can do that here, https://fiddlerman.com/forum/i.....-yourself/ , in the "Introduce Yourself" section. Welcome to the forum.

Thank you for the welcome and the response. I will make sure to introduce myself.

As far as the violin info, I have looked at all the Eastman catalogs, forums etc I could find, but there is no mention of this model. I'm guessing it was available only a short time, hence no information anywhere. I was just hoping someone who happened to have esoteric knowledge of this stumbled on to my post!

@personalduck I am no expert, but from what I have figured out, unless a violin is made by a classic a long time ago, you won't find much info. I would think it would be comparable to that 400 model in the link I provided.

@personalduck -

Welcome to the forum!

Eastman also carries an Ivan Dunov 400 performance series (a step up from student) - currently 401 & 402, so why not contact Eastman and ask them about it?

Thanks for the responses. My first thought was it would be equivalent to the 405 or similar. But you are right Emily- contacting Eastman makes the most sense.

I have been playing a 2011 Samuel Eastman v400 for almost ten years.  I got mine for a deal from someone who tunes up and sells various violins.  It was for a good deal because it had a crack in it which was repaired.  I don't know what caused the crack.  I can't remember if I got it (with a bow) for $650 or $800.  I find it has a very nice sound (more of a bright sound than a rich sound in my opinion). Someone who knows what they're doing with violins though it was worth more than double what I paid for it after he played it for a few seconds.  It did get a small separation near the tailpiece at one point, which wasn't a difficult fix for a luthier, and it's good as ever now.  I love that the back is one solid piece of wood instead of two halves.  I'm not sure what it would have costed if it wasn't a repaired one.  But hopefully that information helps.  If you hear back from Eastman, can you post their response here?  I'm also curious.

The important thing is that you like the sound and that it's easy to play. The instrument itself is Chinese as are 80% of all the worlds violins. :)
