008.JPGImage EnlargerHi, I need input concerning this violin stand I put together.  Do you see any reason not to use this.  The violin bottom sits

on a soft coyote skin while the waist rests on an 1 1/4 dowel which will get wrapped in leather.  I cannot picture any issues

but thought it wise to ask.014.JPGImage Enlarger

Howdy ,

Looks inventive , Mr. Yikes , but it worries me a bit in terms of long terms storage ...weight of the neck , with changes in temp. and humidity over time could have an ill effect ...maybe , maybe not ....time will tell at any rate ...maybe I'm just a worry wart

I prefer to hang my violins by the scroll as this is what i see the most among the pros ...here's a pic ..and another pic of a table top stand used to hold an instrument for playing , practice and performing but not meant for long term storage ...

With you're wood working skills i'm sure you could make a stand to hang multiple violins in profile to save room and also make a stand like the latter one as well for playing ...a hanging stand may be hung on a wall or sit on a table or both...yer choice ....

In the pic of the table top model , to the right is a fixture for hanging but it holds by way of the peg box or on smaller instruments by the pegs , which i don't like to do ...i know ...picky , picky ..bunny-headbangThanks fer sharing yer ideas ...Have fun     Be happyviolin-1267IMG_2518.JPGIMG_2517.JPGImage Enlarger

The stand looks good to me. The only people who may have a problem with it would be the, "ASPCA", (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).. lol

@Ferret: You could use Ferret pelts.   J/K, John.

I can see Tucson's point about long term storage.  I haven't been playing long enough, myself, to be sure about long term things.

But for a functional and cool looking rack/stand for short-term things like practice and jamming/gigging, I think you may be on to something, Mr Y!

Love the "Violin Ninja" thing, too!  That's awesome!

thumbs-up

The asymmetry is slightly worrisome.  I guess you could reorient them once a month so that they spend equal amounts of time leaning left and leaning right.  If their values don't add up to say $1000, I wouldn't worry about it much.

A violin or a person might get impaled on those points.  You could blunt the points or round them off.  You might put your eye out, as they say.

Very tidy of you though ... my violins are mostly strewn around the house.

Thank you all for responding.  It helps me to have my ideas peer reviewed.  The idea behind the stand was to prevent guitar players from crashing into them while swinging their necks around (does that sound like a voice of experience?) so the lower the better.

The stand you see in the pics was made with scraps on hand.  The actual stand will have a "c" cut into the sides to hold a bow and be shaped better.

It's called product placement,,,,,,,,did I say that right,FM?

As far as the coyote pelt, this was left over when I had a hat made for my wife (very pretty hat, btw).

Again, thank you for responding.

Nice little stand, sounds ideal for your purpose!   Love the fact it's just made up from "bits and pieces lying around" - cool !   A nice little brass, or even cut copper sheet, decorative item on the sides would finish it off nicely !

I actually like it very much. It's unique above all and I believe there cannot be any damage from resting the fiddle that way, IMAO. We hold the violins by their necks for goodness sake. :)
The only concern I would have is using valuable space which we are short on. Otherwise, GREAT!!!
I have plenty of those "I'm a Violin Ninja" stickers for anyone who wants one. :)
