There was a recent discussion somewhere about metronomes. It may have been in someone's blog, I don't recall, exactly. It did remind me that I was considering getting a pendulum mechanical one.

The reason I want a pendulum mechanical is because I am tired of batteries, and I am not interested in having to keep a socket in mind when Imset up to play, and I just wind up mechanical devices.

The pendulum is desired because I think the pendulum swinging will be visible in my peripheral vision, making it easy to place pretty much anywhere when I play.

I have one in my Korg tuner, but it is confusing and I have to look right at it. I do not like the sound it makes either, which does affect me, so I do not use a metronome.

I do think that if I started using a metronome that it would definitely help me.

My question is, can anyone recommend one, purchased in the US, that will not break the bank and will last a decent amount of time between wind ups? I would like the option of a bell on first beats, or shutting the bell off.

I am pretty sure anything as inexpensive as I was looking at, $20-$40, might not be accurate, as most of those reviews pointed out. I usually do not put much stock in reviews, but I am thinking that anything in the low end probably does not have a well made mechanism.

I want to make sure I get on that will be accurate and reliable.

Are wood ones better than plastic? Would I be better off looking for an old one that is still actually working? I am thinking the quality of the mechanism might be better than what is made now? A lot of new items are made cheaply.

I will not be getting it until, maybe May. So, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

@ABitRusty Thanks! That is the main one I was looking at.

Am I correct that seeing the pendulum swing in my peripheral vision will help, and that this will help with learning?

I have issues with anything other than whole, half, quarter and 8th notes. And then, only if there are arranged simply. Adding dots, 16th, etc, I cannot figure out the rhythm. I try to hear beats in my head but, inevitably, I start counting in the crazy beats I am playing!

it has helped before so yes.  There was some guitar strums i was trying to get correct and  for some reason at that time watching it helped with what i was trying to do...

For the most part though..Id say letting it swing for a couple of minutes and just listening to the clicks and humming the tune to it helped me more...  Sometimes the bell helps as a place holder for specific beats.   For example... if im trying to do something only on beat 1 id turn on the bell and start counting 1 when it chimes... etc so on so forth

just try it for yourself... youll find your way with it.  or a way to use it..

I can see where watching for a bit would help, at least me. I am very visual and I think actually "seeing" the beats, and eventually counting the odd beats in, will help me keep that beat or rhythm a little better, or at least help pick out how those, what I call odd short beats or notes, how they fit within the one beat or measure. A visual picture from the pendulum with the sound.

I probably did not explain it right, but I hope you may have understood what I said, 😂.
