Any idea what this weird marking is?
This is on a "real" $200 Strad made in Czeckoslovakia.....
Looks to be a real antique copy, but this marking is weird.

i wonder if that is some type of serial number a school or store assigned to loaner or rental instrument.. Ive no idea though. how does it play and sound or are you looking to purchase it?

Not mine and probably not looking to purchase, just saw this on local Craigslist and thought it was odd. I was thinking the same, some school or loaner program.

I've seen someone in a community orchestra play a viola with a number stamped on it in a similar manner, but on the back rather than on the rib. I was told that instrument had been previously owned by a high school music program.

My guess is that the owner/school/organization, marks there instruments for inventory.

Fiddlerman, yep, I think you're right about it. Talking of violins, I've heard about almost the same marks on some other models as well. And I think it's pretty good if the creator shows who is he, and when he has manufactured that masterpiece. I've got recently a violin few days ago, right here and now simply wonder, is there any of such marks on it as well, or not.
