Beware the warnings ....   ( yeah, I know, allergies and so on - so you gotta give them kudos for stating this on the little rosin cake if nothing else ) - actually - I like it, it works for me (the rosin, not the allergies )

I've got safety goggles and I think I've still got some face masks. I'm ready to play the violin!

Not to mention ear-plugs!

I've acquired 5 rosins now. Jade (don't like much), Hidersine 6V, Hills, Kaplan, Royal Oak. I chose them because they were all more or less the same price. That probably means they are all more or less the same rosin!

It's either silly or it's normal (it may be a search for something that more practice and better technique would provide). At least RAS (Rosin Acquisition Syndrome) is cheaper than Guitar or Violin Acquisition Syndrome!

Pop poll - how many different rosins do you own?

Just two rosins, the only two cakes of rosin I've ever bought in almost 19 years of playing. One cake of Hill Light for my violin (which gets played only a few times a year), and one cake of Hill Dark for my viola (which I typically play for 8-12 hours a week).

I bought the Hill Light when I got my violin in 1999. I bought the Hill Dark when I got my current viola in 2005 or 2006. (The first viola I had was on loan for four years, along with the bow, shoulder rest, and cake of Hill Dark in the case, so I didn't have to buy my own viola rosin until later.) I may need to replace the viola rosin in the next year or two. The violin rosin still looks almost new.

I don't collect instruments or other accessories either, by the way.

I've tried countless rosins. So much so that I'm more confused than ever about which one works the best for me. LOL

So... two weeks ago I dropped my Hill Dark rosin on a hard floor and shattered it. I replaced it with L'Opera Jade, which I'm finding plays smoother on my viola and makes all kinds of articulation much easier. I still have just one rosin for each instrument.

I have 3, and I've only been playing seriously for like 15 months..... I feel like the perfect rosin is kind of like the Fountain of Youth. It's rumored to exist, but you'll search your whole life trying to find it! LOL

Just my 3 have confused me. Some days I like one, some days I like a different one. My teacher swears it has to do with the weather.

Oh, my three are......Holstein, Pirastro Schwarz and Gustave Bernardel Colophane. The last one leaves LOTS of dust/residue on the violin, but I do like it.

Come and let us reason together.

That makes it easy to write notes on your fiddle. exactly

Perfect :-)

While I'm looking for the perfect rosin, maybe I'll find Ponce de Léon's fountain of youth down here in Florida.

I've bought a few more. I found my cake of Kaplan shattered before I had even used it. Maybe it arrived like that, but I can't be sure, and I'm too honest to send it back. If its melting point is 100 centigrade I'll put it in a water bath and see if I can re-form it. If not, it may be dangerous to melt it, so I'll throw it away.

I've got some Royal Oak and some Hill's and some Hidersine 6V, all very dark.

But recently I've bought a few middling/amber ones. I got some goldflex, and the Stentor rosin that came with the fiddle looks lovely, so I bought some Hidersine 3V to see how it compares with the 6V.

Crazy, I know, but it's inexpensive fun.
