Evidently no one remember's the post I put up here a couple month's ago and I can't seem to find it now. I called the company,"D'Addario" in N.Y. and specifically asked what the string's should be cleaned with to remove rosin build-up. He said he would check to find out, the next day I spoke with him again and his reply was "Isopropol" alcohol. He did say they made a special cleaner for guitar string's but not violin strings. I think (not sure) but I think it was MGN posted that the guitar string cleaner also contained alcohol.
One person on here had posted something about boiling guitar string's to restore them to a like new condition. I wouldn't go to that extreme.
You don't saturate the cloth so the thing is dripping of alcohol, just enough to clean off the rosin and I wouldn't soak them in alcohol either, that would definately affect the inner core.
