My son is leanring Suzuki Book 6. He is currently fitted with VSO (and he is complaining about pain). So, it is time for upgrade. Our budget is around 700 and so it will be Scott Cao 017 or Fiddlerman Artist. Scott Cao is local (living near Campbell) and so it is a plus.
I cannot find any review which play side by side though.

@andy You need to contact:Fiddlershop
The forum is not part ofmthe fiddlershop itself. They are very good people and extremely helpful, so if you contact via their contact email, website chat or call them you will get very good customer service from them. I have purchased a violin, viola and cello from them. No problems.
This forum will be great for both your son and yourself in his journey. We look forward to being a part of it.
I would suggest you edit your profile and not use your email address for your username. It is visible to all members and anyone who visits as a guest. I have sent you an email.
Thanks. I have updated as suggested.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear that your son is complaining about pain. The pain itself can be caused by either incorrect accessories or bad technique. His teacher can focus on where your son is using too much tension. If the pain is coming from holding the instrument, he is either squeezing the instrument more than necessary, using excess tension, holding it in a less than optimal position, or playing for longer periods than he is used to. If it comes from holding the instrument it is probable that the chin-rest and or shoulder-rest does not fit his body well enough.
As per the purchase, let me know if I can be of assistance. We sell both of those instruments and we go a step further than Scott Cao by individually testing and adjusting the instruments. Also, we offer a 45 day satisfaction guarantee. 😁
Thanks for the suggestion. We did pick up a Kreisler 750 from Scott Cao, Campbell. I did order the case from your site and waiting for the shipment.
Pain could be mainly from his "cheap" VSO we had for 2 years. It was okay when playing simpler songs. But, I guess he needed to put more effort to play harder ones. I guess the term might be "playability."

@andy -
Thank you.
I sincerely hope the new violin solves all of your Son's problems with pain.
Now that he has a better quality instrument, just thought I'd mention strings can make a big difference for me. I've noticed some strings are much easier for me to play on, respond easier/feel easier on my fingers. When my strings really need to be replaced with new ones, I find I'm forcing myself to try to compensate (until I realize what's happening).
The quality of the bow plays a big part, if your Son is trying to get better sound out of his violin. ...even rosin.
Still, we've talked a lot (here on the Forum) about tension, along with repetitive movement injury - how good warm-up exercises & allowing time to heal can help prevent more serious problems.
