The closest luthier to me is more than 2 hours away.  So, rather than driving more than 8 hours for a rehair (2 hours there, 2 hours back to drop off, 2 hours there, two hours back to pick it up), I’ve been using an online bow rehair service for over 8 years now.

It has worked well for me--

I have used Fiddlershop to repair me bow several times when it's needed, I kept the packaging the Bow came in and I call Fiddlershop they send me a shipper by email, you print it off take to FedEx. And in a couple of week a Bow with a fresh hair job arrives. Easy peasy.

Wonder, if I shipped my bald head to them if they could rehair it?   Hummm.

I was thinking I would be having Fiddlershop do it when I need it done next time because the luthier I use has retired. His store was purchased. The new owners moved and closed that other location. So, it will be Fiddlershop next time.

Thanks, @Mark

I’ve been using the other place so long, I hadn’t thought about Fiddlershop doing it—I mean I’ve realized they are a full shop, I just thought they focused on local for maintenance stuff.  “Duh” on my part.  Removed the link in my previous post.

Yes, good point. We re-hair bows but I don't blame people for driving to their nearby local shops.

@SharonC -

What do you look for, what are the things that make YOU think it's time to rehair your bow?

@ELCBK  When my bow isn’t gripping, & kind of just skates across the strings where it doesn’t sound (or feel) as good.

I think there are a lot on factors involved (environmental & use) to determine the answer to the “How often” question.  I just go by what I feel my bow doing—if I don’t like it, I get a re-hair.

I have a couple bows that the hairs keep breaking… that’s telling me they are due for a rehair, lol.

I’ve never actually had a bow rehaired, so haven’t really thought of who to use. I’ll look around locally most likely. I think a few of the music shops offer that service. There is a person my old fiddle teacher used, but you can only drop off & pick up on a Tuesday between 10-4. Not very useful for people who work an 8-5, lol.

For me there are several possible signs that my bow needs a rehair soon. It might be bow hairs breaking, or the bow hair feeling like it's become a bit too stretchy, or if it doesn't seem to hold rosin well. Mostly I just get a sense that it's due for a rehair, which takes about a year on average.
