If only there was an objective way to judge.
Does the E sound "OK"? Does the E belong with the rest of the strings? Is it a good family of sounds? Some reference point is needed.
(Enter reference point) The obvious reference point is the E on the A string ... the usual pinky E. If I play the two side by side then nasty E string should be revealed.
Certainly, the E on the A string "belongs" with the set and has all good characteristics.
So what? The attached recording is me rocking back and forth between the E string and the fingered E on the A string. Are they drastically different? (when in tune)
NO Therefore, if the A is any good than so is the E (string) There is barely any difference between the two strings in this "E" mode test.

You have a good point Springer, I really like the violin sound range but the E makes me want to grind my teeth. I think I just hate something that high! lol...now I wonder with gut strings it the E is less bright and shrill...

I use my bow on it! (lol ok too easy) and I hate what I hear no matter how I place my fingers or how I bow. Somehow the E on the A is less a pain to hear, less bright I might say.
Maybe I should have been a viola player also

C'mon, you know better than that !
Your being the performer puts you in one of the worse places to hear your violin as it truly is. ("under the chin"). You must either:
Have someone else play it for you, or
Record your self with some decent equipment, or
Put cotton in your left ear to block that nasty "f" hole.
( The sounds you hear are called "near field mapping" by some clever people who know what they are talking about.)
Give the E string a fair hearing !!!!

I have lots of E string notes in my next video, maybe it sounds better when it's not so close to my ear, you are right of course Oliver! But it's not fun when you don't like what you play no? I should start to use the recording more often in my practice.

OK. I will watch for your next video.
Yes, I would prefer to really hear what I am playing. Maybe that is only possible with very good ($) violins ?
I do, however, practice with cotton in my left ear (for several reasons ) That helps and I do frequent recording sessions to remind me how bad my intonation can be.
