Very interesting. Love hearing details about her.
If you take a close-up of the strings, both sides, we will be able to identify them. Maybe your teacher wants to do the hike with you. :) You can alternate carrying her to the top of "Inspiration Point". The traveler might need some fresh air. ;)
Look forward to your update. Thanks

It's a coincident that we went hiking to inspiration point this evening. Picking up hiking again just this summer for having stopped hiking for nine years, I felt my aging. Two months ago, we went on this trail and did not make it to the top. Today was a good time to test it. We all pushed each other quite a bit, with two whining kids, we made it to the top, enjoyed the beautiful view and sunset, and came back down, two hours, round trip. Better than I thought! So I am very willing to try, my daughter said she would help carrying it. Having my teacher to go on the hike sound like a good idea, but she is so busy...I will send her an email to see if she would be interested he he he....! (edit: I just did)

Very cool. That means that the traveler has been to the top of Inspiration Point. She really gets around. LOL
Thanks for the update. Let us know what your teacher says as well. :)

I may have changed the strings when I had it. I made up a new bridge and sound post and I can't imagine not changing the strings. If so I would have used either Pro-Arte or Zyex.

not yet, it will be this weekend, though!

However, the traveler made it to China town on Aug 11, to LEGOLAND on Aug 23, and to Mexico on Aug 24 :)) Should I put pins on those places, too? I did have enough gut to play in the public, thought people may through $$ in the case:) or kick me out of there:((

Ooops, I left out the word "not" -- I meant to type "I did not have the gut to play in the public..."  So, there was no money collected! I wish I had done it, though, then it will pay for the shipping :))

I did have to open the case for one of the soldiers at the border on Mexican side I thought (I didn't understand what he said but his body language said it all) he was either interested in what's in the case or he was joking with his colleagues that there might be a gun in my case.

:(( we did not make it up to inspiration point today because of red flag warning. We will do it on Monday! I was trying to cut down the weight to just bring the violin in a foam case, but my daughter thought the case should be up there as well:) hopefully she will help carry it as she promised:))

My teacher won't be able to make it on Monday, so she won't be able to play on it, but she has heard it during my lesson.

I changed the strings today to zyex, I decided to do so because I thought even if Kevin changed them, they are about 18 months old. Any way, I put the old strings in the case for emergency, i.e., in case the strings broke, one could used the old one. They are still in pretty good shape any way.

When I changed the strings, I realized that I don't have a fine tuner and that the pegs are wood painted black. I am ordering a fine tuner (hopefully I will received it by Friday) and I have to see if I have a set of ebony pegs that matches with the ebony chinrest and ebony tail piece and end button (I did change the end button to an ebony one).

Hello Hello!!

The Fiddlerman Traveling Violin has made it safe to my house in Roseville, Cali.

I am overjoyed.  I can't explain the excitement for me to have it here.  I can't begin to tell you the tidings of good vibes that overwhelmed me as I opened up the case.  I am not kidding... it was a true and complete joy for me.

I tuned and played just a little. What a pretty violin.... I feel pretty lucky to have this visitor.

Cheers and Thank you....

Hi, Toni,

I am glad you received the traveler! I was a little worried. I replaced the paper on the bottom to foam to better protect the traveler, I wish the box is a little narrower and a little longer. I used the same box to keep the history, but it may need to be replaced at some point.

Well, enjoy it while you have it!

pky

Now, I'd like to state few words about my experience with the Traveler:

First of all, I crocheted a blanket for the traveler, and that I put a silky backing lining on it. I chose burgundy color to match with the lining of the case.

Then, I took the opportunity to practice some basic luthier's skills:) I changed the pro-arte strings that has been on it for at least 18 months to a stet of Zyex strings. I also changed all the fittings (they were painted black soft wood) to ebony fittings (pegs, tailpiece, end button, chinrest, and fine tuner)  and I intentionally put one fine tuner on only to make it look more professional :)) My teacher said I probably put in more than what the traveler worth, to me the Traveler is priceless:).  However, I forgot to take a picture of it for before and after:( (I wonder if Toni could take a picture of it and post it (or email it to me) so I could have a copy of the "after look." thank you!

I also fitted a new bridge, just to get another chance to practice my bridge fitting skills. Both my daughter and I thought it sound louder with the new bridge. I wished I had time to video tape the before and after change, too, so there would be a comparison of sound for bridge and strings. Any way, I was busier than I thought I would be, after I made all the changes, I ran out of time...

We traveled with the traveler to LA China Town, LEGOLAND, Tijuana in Mexico, Inspiration Point (hiking trail), Solvang, and Santa Barbara Mission. We played it at the last three locations and had a great time with it! Just wish I could keep it a little longer...

When we were playing up on inspiration point, it felt great! Music and nature! They go so well together! I felt so peaceful and that I had accomplished something! I think I may do more of it - bring a violin with me when I go hiking or camping. I know people said violin is not an outdoor instrument, but it's from the nature! As long as you are not using a multimillion strad violin :) After all, it was not as heavy as I thought it would be - I carried the traveler in its case in a fabric draw string backpack round trip (three hours) all by myself.

In the mean time, I am trying to upload all the photos and video I have for the traveler to my computer so I could send them to FM and post them.

Hello PKY!!

The crocheted and silky backing is PERFECT. What a lovely touch.  I confess to almost crying with delight upon opening the case.

I would love to take pics to send you or post here.   I didn't know if we were supposed to put too much the thread or not.  I have not read all the correspondence here.

I have a nice violin box that I can use to put inside the big box... I will test it out, I think it will snug up with the case nicely along with packaging material.

I loved to hear your experience.. and  I agree the traveller is priceless.

I will  play the Traveller whenever I can and break in those strings.   :)

Take care and thanks everyone for making such a beautiful project violin and taking such lovely care of it.

Well I have had the Traveller for a month.  I hate to see her go.   She is a magic violin with a rich vibe that comes off her. She is alive with a lot of love and care.

A week ago I took her to San Francisco, to Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

I did stand out near the bridge and play a verse of Skye Boat song.  I was nervous and very hungry and tired.  I have pictures to post and a recording of me playing the her.  I should have played an old standby instead of a work in progress.

I will post pictures and she will be with Dennis for  the next month... Who knows.. maybe he can show her off on Fiddlefest.  ( Ha ha  no pressure Denny).

I can't say enough on how much this violin touched my heart and soul.

Great news Toni, sorry you had to let her go. :(
Look forward to seeing the pictures. You can send them to me if you like and I'll post them and anything else you would like to share about the Traveler. :)

Okay..sorry for the sideways photos.. I am not really that technology challenged.. :)  This was at Baker Beach.   I have never seen such a sunny and clear day on this beach.  This is the view from the famous Cliff House Restaurant.  It was a great day for Fish and Chips.IMG_3098-1.JPGImage Enlarger

This is just another view of the violin about town.  It was a great day, after arriving in SF I found out it was FLEET WEEK and there was an AIR show.  While stuck in traffic for two hours on the Wharf, I had the best experience.  The Blue Angels were doing an air show. And for one hour, they rocked the Wharf.  It was the most amazing thing I have seen.  They took The City by storm.   IMG_3032.JPGImage Enlarger

Nice pix, Toni! Very cool to see the Traveler -- with my name on it -- in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. This is really one of the coolest projects ever.

Enjoyed the Traveling Violin photos. I used to spend every summer as a kid in SF visiting my grandparents - nice to see the Golden Gate - it's been a few years since I was there - and fish and chips sound yummy!semiquaver-1214
